  • Patent number: 7838067
Abstract: An information-storage media is provided that includes: (a) a substrate disk 312 having first and second opposing surfaces; (b) a first selected layer 304 on the first surface, the first selected layer having a first thickness; (c) a second selected layer 308 on the second surface, the second selected layer having a second thickness, wherein the first and second selected layers have a different chemical composition than the substrate disk; and (d) an information-storage layer 412 adjacent to one or both of the selected layers. The first and second thicknesses are different to provide an unequal stress distribution across the cross-section of the media.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7322098
Abstract: Various methods and apparatus for simultaneously processing two single-sided hard memory disks is provided. Disks are positioned in pairs, with one surface of one disk positioned adjacent one surface of the second disk, with the disk surfaces touching or with a slight separation between them. In this back-to-back orientation, the disk pairs may be processed using conventional double-sided disk processing equipment and techniques. However, each disk will not have two active surfaces. Because of the positioning of the disks during processing, only one surface of each disk will be subjected to full processing. Therefore, each disk will only have one active side.

  • Patent number: 7267841
Abstract: An information-storage media is provided that includes: (a) a substrate disk 312 having first and second opposing surfaces; (b) a first interface layer 304 on the first surface, the first interface layer having a first thickness; (c) a second interface layer 308 on the second surface, the second interface layer having a second thickness, wherein the first and second interface layers have a different chemical composition than the substrate disk; and (d) an information-storage layer 412 adjacent to one or both of the interface layers. The first and second thicknesses are different to provide an unequal stress distribution across the cross-section of the media.

  • Patent number: 7165308
Abstract: Various apparatus and methods are provided for handling and transporting pairs of gap merge disks. A transfer member is provided in one embodiment which engages the outer perimeter of a pair of disks at three locations. The transfer member is configured to induce an angled tilt to the respective disks such that the bottom perimeter edges of the disks are spaced apart and the top perimeter edges of the disks are in contact. A mandrel is also provided which is configured to engage a pair of disks oriented in this fashion at the center aperture for purposes of transferring the pair of disks from the transport device to a second location for processing or transfer to another processing device.

  • Patent number: 7052739
Abstract: Various apparatus and methods are provided for lubricating hard memory disks. A mandrel is provided in one embodiment with three rows of teeth and provides a stable, three-point engagement with the inside edge of the disks at the center aperture. When removing disks from a cassette, the mandrel preferably places a uniform space between the disks. In a second embodiment, the mandrel may be used to lubricate single-sided hard memory disks. The single-sided hard memory disk may be positioned on the mandrel in pairs in a gap merge orientation, or equally spaced apart.
