  • Patent number: 7255019
Abstract: A method and system for controlling downshifting in an automated mechanical transmission system (10) utilized on a vehicle. When an automatic power downshift from a currently engaged ratio (GR) is required, the engine acceleration (EA) is monitored and compared with an engine free acceleration (EFA) to detect a false Neutral condition and to take appropriate action accordingly. Alternatively, a false Neutral condition is detected when the Absolute Value of the rotational speed of the output shaft (OS) times the currently engaged gear ratio (GR) minus the rotational speed of the input shaft (IS) is less than a predetermined value (ABS((OS*GR)?IS)).

  • Patent number: 5630773
Abstract: An automatic clutch controller for a vehicle that reduces the oscillatory response to clutch engagement. The automatic clutch controller receives inputs from a throttle position sensor, an engine speed sensor and a transmission input speed sensor and develops a clutch actuation signal controlling a clutch actuator from disengaged to fully engaged. The clutch engagement signal at least partially engages the friction clutch in a manner to cause the measured transmission input speed to asymptotically approach engine speed employing an approximate inverse model of this oscillatory response. The automatic clutch controller develops a slip reference signal as a function of throttle position and engine speed and compares it to actual slip.

  • Patent number: 5537894
Abstract: A control system/method for an automated transmission system including a splitter-type, semi-blocked mechanical transmission (12) is provided. The control provides a technique for sensing auxiliary section engagement faults or auxiliary section and main section engagement faults and for operation in a fault-tolerant mode upon sensing such faults. In one embodiment, auxiliary section (214) engagement faults are sensed when the main section (212) is confirmed as engaged in an appropriate ratio and the transmission is confirmed as engaged in a ratio (GR.sub.N) other than the target ratio (GR.sub.T). In another embodiment, engagement faults are sensed when one section is confirmed as properly engaged and the transmission does not achieve engagement in a target ratio after a preset period of time.

  • Patent number: 5506771
Abstract: A control system and method for a semi-automatic mechanical transmission system (10) is provided for allowing operator request for a direct downshift or upshift into a preselected start ratio, under certain predefined conditions. The preselected start ratio is that ratio actually utilized in the immediately preceding vehicle start from stop operation.

  • Patent number: 5441462
Abstract: A control system/method for controlling the engagement and disengagement of a friction master clutch (16) in an automated mechanical transmission system (10) is provided. The control system/method is effective to minimize shift transient times and to minimize or eliminate the occurrence of cab lurch events.

  • Patent number: 5412182
Abstract: An interstitial heater, made of an electrically conductive tube with a wire wound in a toroidal configuration about the tube and connected to a capacitor to form a tank circuit, is driven with a radiofrequency power source at resonance to provide tissue heating by thermal conduction.

  • Patent number: 5408895
Abstract: A control method/system is provided for controlling start from stop shifting operations of a vehicular semi-automatic transmission system (10) of the type automatically implementing selected gear changes of a mechanical change gear transmission (12) and requiring manual operation (3) of the vehicle master clutch (16) in start from stop conditions is provided. During engagement of a selected start ratio, the system controller (38) monitors for gear butt conditions and will warn the operator if such conditions are sensed.

  • Patent number: 5385515
Abstract: A control system and method for a vehicular semi-automatic mechanical transmission system (10) is provided for allowing controller or operator request for a direct downshift into a preselected start ratio, under certain predefined conditions. The direct downshift into the preselected start gear ratio is sequenced such that the target synchronous engine speed (OS*GR) at target gear ratio engagement is substantially equal to a preselected desirable, preferably constant, value for all selectable start ratios.

  • Patent number: 5272441
Abstract: Open-circuit and closed-circuit faults in a solenoid controlled actuator are detected using shunt resistors (R1, R4) across the solenoid (1), a transistor switch (4), and a voltage monitor (7) and/or (14) across one or both of these which can detect a faulty open-circuit solenoid that is not energized, or a faulty closed-circuit solenoid that is energized. According to the present invention, before each change in actuator position, the solenoids are all caused to assume an opposite energization condition for a period of time insufficient to move the actuator, but enough to check the voltage monitor responses. In this way, both open and closed circuit faults are detected.

  • Patent number: 5204816
Abstract: A fuel control system (100) for controlling the fueling of an internal combustion engine (E), and a fault detection system therefor, is provided. Signals (12, 17, 15, 16) indicative of the positioning of an operator controlled master unit (2) and of the slaved actuator (6,1) are compared to sense the existence of faults.

  • Patent number: 5117791
Abstract: A safety method is provided for use with control systems for vehicles such as trucks, and in particular for electromechanical controls (10) that assist the driver in shifting the gears (12), operating the clutch (16), and in actuating the throttle (22, 24, 26) by remote control. The method, which is for use in a vehicle's throttle-actuator subsystem (26A), utilizes a transmission control processor (42A) and a throttle control processor (42B). The method ascertains whether, when the driver of the vehicle removes his foot from the accelerator pedal (24A), control of the fuel pump (26C) returns to the idle governor as it should. The flow of fuel is stopped if it does not return properly. Also, a method is provided that monitors the throttle actuator (26A) to insure that it accurately follows throttle commands such as the position of the accelerator pedal (24A).
