  • Publication number: 20190332220
Abstract: Methods and devices for adjusting a power mode of a display are disclosed. An example method includes detecting a set of contact signals on a surface of the device and determining whether the set of contact signals correspond to a contact signature associated with an in-use state of the display. The example method further includes transitioning the power mode of the display to a power saving mode in response to determining that the set of contact signals do not correspond to the contact signature associated with the in-use state of the display, and retaining the power mode of the display in a current power mode in response to determining that the set of contact signals correspond to the contact signature associated with the in-use state of the display. An additional example method may further include detecting whether a proximity sensor at the device is occluded prior to the transition.

  • Publication number: 20190220096
Abstract: Methods, systems, and apparatuses for natural content editing with gestures include a gesture recognition engine with an input component that receives first information concerning content rendered to a user interface and second information concerning a user gesture applied to the user interface. A context-free gesture recognizer obtains shape features based on the second information and generates a context-free gesture hypothesis for the user gesture based on the shape features. A context-aware gesture recognizer obtains contextual features based on the first information and the second information and evaluates the context-free gesture hypothesis based on the contextual features to make a final gesture decision for the user gesture. An output component outputs the final gesture decision for the user gesture to the application. An application programming interface enables an application to invoke the gesture recognition engine and allows for customized gesture configuration and recognition.

  • Publication number: 20160085388
Abstract: Desktop environment differentiation in virtual desktop techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a user is logged into a corresponding single user account of an operating system of a computing device. Functionality accessible via the single user account is exposed to implement a plurality of virtual desktops associated with the single user account. Each of the plurality of virtual desktops including a user interface that is configured to have an associated collection of windows corresponding to applications and desktop environments that are differentiated, one from another.

  • Publication number: 20160077685
Abstract: Operating system virtual desktop techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a plurality of virtual desktops are implemented by a single operating system of a computing device. Each of the virtual desktops includes a user interface that is configured to have an associated collection of windows that correspond to applications. Access to the plurality of virtual desktops is managed by the operating system that is navigable by a user to interact with associated collection of representations of application and windows corresponding to the applications by switching between the plurality of virtual desktops.

  • Patent number: 8856502
Abstract: Pre-installed application activation techniques are described in which live content for applications is activated before user interaction with the applications. Input indicative of an initial log-in of a user to access an operating system is detected. In response, configuration of an account for the user with the operating system may be initiated to set-up a device for first use by the user. During the configuration, notifications are activated through a notification system of the operating system to obtain live content for one or more pre-installed applications on the computing device. The activation occurs before interaction of the user with the pre-installed applications. Live content may then be incorporated with representations of the applications within a user interface for the operating system, such as displaying application tiles having corresponding live content in a start screen presented to the user after completion of the initial set-up.
