    Abstract: A user device automatically sends a presence message to a presence server when the user device is powered on. Thereafter, the user device may send a sleep message to the presence server upon power down or prolonged period of inactivity, or the device may be required to send periodic messages to the presence server to maintain it as being listed as an active device. The presence server is then used to manage communication with the user device based on the presence information.
