  • Patent number: 7949169
Abstract: A method for the automated detection of target structures shown in digital medical images, the method of comprising: (1) generating a three dimensional (3D) volumetric data set of a patient region within which the target structure resides from a plurality of segmented medical image slices; (2) grouping contiguous structures that are depicted in the 3D volumetric data set to create corresponding grouped structure data sets; (3) assigning each grouped structure data set to one of a plurality of detection algorithms, each detection algorithm being configured to detect a different type of target structure; and (4) processing each grouped structure data set according to its assigned detection algorithm to thereby detect whether any target structures are present in the medical images. Preferably, the target structures are pulmonary nodules, and a specialized detection algorithm is applied to image data classified as a candidate for depicting perivascular nodules.

  • Patent number: 7327866
Abstract: A method and apparatus for compressing computed tomography raw image data includes taking image data with a CT scan, stripping away any proprietary frame or reference data, compressing the data using a compression software such as JPEG-LS, and then storing or transmitting the data over a network or the like to another computer or storage/display device. The compression software may be conveniently stored in a computer and ready for processing of the raw CT scan data. The compressed raw CT scan data may then be used to reconstruct images, as desired, at a later date. By compressing the raw data, it is possible to later reconstruct additional or different views than those taken or used at the time of original diagnosis as may be useful for diagnosis of other medical conditions later discovered or to verify a diagnosis previously taken with the exact same data used by the medical professional during the original diagnosis.

  • Patent number: 6866653
Abstract: A syringe, which may be pre-filled, and a method of using the syringe is disclosed to provide sequential injection of two different fluids without mixing thereof. The syringe comprises in a first version a plunger and an intermediate disc sealingly disposed within a generally cylindrical barrel, with an outlet portion distal of the barrel, the outlet portion being generally larger in diameter so that as the disc is advanced into it far enough to substantially inject the first fluid the disc loses sealing engagement and the second fluid is then expelled around the disc and through the syringe opening. Baffles are provided within the outlet portion to prevent the disc from inadvertently sealing the opening, and channels may be provided around the baffles.

  • Patent number: 6635030
Abstract: A contrast medium injector for injecting a patient with contrast medium for a CT scan is programmed to provide an injection protocol that is a representation of an ideally defined exponential curve with an initial injection rate decaying at an exponential rate. This has been found to produce a uniform vascular enhancement for the scanning of a patient's blood vessels. The particular exponential decay coefficient which has been found to be optimal is directly proportional to the cardiac output divided by the patient's weight and is approximated at 0.01 for a typical human.

  • Patent number: 5687208
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for predicting prior to injection an organ specific contrast enhancement in a patient for a preselected contrast injection protocol for pre-determining a computed tomography scan. The invention is preferably implemented in a computer program which creates a mathematical model of human cardiovascular physiology in a hypothetical patient with a specific body habitus subjected to the pre-selected contrast injection protocol. The predicted contrast enhancement is then displayed for operator approval and may be then used to control a CT scanner or contrast injector system, to perform the injection and scan with the pre-selected injection protocol and scan parameters. The mathematical model includes models of organs and vessels using differential equations to describe mass transport of contrast agent through the cardiovascular system.
