  • Patent number: 6327012
Abstract: An orientation film is formed over an electrode substrate via external connection terminals and a surface of the orientation film is processed by the rubbing method. The orientation film on the external connection terminals is irradiated with an ultraviolet laser beam so that the orientation film is removed from the external connection terminals for electrically connecting to terminals of peripheral circuits. Energy density of the ultraviolet laser beam is adjusted to a range of 110 to 210 mJ/cm2 with an attenuator.

  • Patent number: 6239855
Abstract: A method for producing a liquid crystal display panel of the present invention includes the steps of: forming a plurality of injection seals on at least one of a pair of substrates, the injection seals defining a liquid crystal injection area; forming a dummy seal of dispersed sealant particles outside the liquid crystal injection area; attaching the substrates to each other thereby sandwiching the injection seal and the dummy seal therebetween; and injecting a liquid crystal material into the liquid crystal injection area formed between the pair of substrates.

  • Patent number: 6104467
Abstract: A cell gap uniformity in the vicinity of a seal and inside a display region of a liquid crystal display device is enhanced. Further, even when a multi-daylight press is used in a substrate bonding process, a variation in cell gap depending on the stratal positions of substrates is suppressed. In the process of bonding together two substrates on which display use electrodes are formed, the two substrates are bonded together with interposition of a seal member and a spacer. Thereafter, first, the bonded substrates are pressurized according to a specified pressurization profile in a normal temperature state of, for example, 26.degree. C., thereby extending the seal member. Subsequently, these substrates are pressurized according to a pressurization profile whose maximum pressure is set smaller than the maximum pressure in the normal temperature state with heat applied to the substrates, thereby hardening the seal member.

  • Patent number: 5982470
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates having a plurality of display-use electrodes formed thereon, a seal for connecting the pair of substrates in such a manner that respective electrode forming surfaces face each other, a liquid crystal layer formed by sealing a liquid crystal in a space surrounded by the pair of substrates and the seal, and dummy electrodes for achieving a uniform thickness of the liquid crystal layer in the display area. The display-use electrodes and the dummy electrodes are interleaved on four sides of the seal, and an absolute value for variations in interleaved ratio in the four sides, indicative of a ratio of an area occupied by the display-use electrodes and the dummy electrodes on the seal is not more than a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5637359
Abstract: There is provided a plastic liquid crystal display device in which an aligning film processing can be carried out at 150 to 180.degree. C. and which can have optical characteristics comparable to those of the conventional glass substrate liquid crystal display device. The plastic liquid crystal device comprises a pair of plastic substrates, transparent electrodes, insulating films for protecting the electrodes, aligning films and a liquid crystal, wherein the aligning film is an aligning film which is formed by dissolving a high-temperature sintering organic polymer aligning film made of polyimide or a polyimide-like substance in a solvent, printing a resulting solution thereof on a substrate, removing only the solvent by heating and/or heating under reduced pressure, and sintering the substrate at 200.degree. C. or less.

  • Patent number: 5354497
Abstract: A liquid crystal display according to the present invention has a pair of plastic substrates opposing each other and a liquid crystal sandwiched therebetween. A hard coat layer made from a resin composition including fine particles of silicon oxide and an organic resin, an undercoat layer and a transparent electrode which are respectively made from an inorganic oxide are formed in this order on the inner opposing surface of each plastic substrate. Thus, a liquid crystal display having a hard coat layer serving as a buffer layer is provided. In this liquid crystal display, cracks in the undercoat layer and the transparent electrode and peeling between the plastic substrate and the undercoat layer are prevented.

  • Patent number: 5336535
Abstract: A plastic liquid crystal display device having top coats (insulating films) which can be set at 200.degree. C. or less without resort to ultraviolet light and have appreciable flexibility. The plastic liquid crystal display device comprises a pair of plastic substrates, transparent electrodes, insulating films for protecting the transparent electrodes, aligning films and a liquid crystal, wherein the insulating film (top coat) is formed by dispersing any one of acryl-silanic resin, epoxy-silanic resin and silanic resin in a solvent to provide a solution, coating the solution on the transparent electrode and sintering a resulting coating at 200.degree. C. or less.

  • Patent number: 5278685
Abstract: First and second transparent hard plastic substrates are placed one over the other to form therebetween a gap into which a liquid crystal is to be sealed in. The first and second substrates are mounted on the reference plane of a stage. The distance between the first substrate and the reference plane is measured in a non-contact manner at a plurality of measuring points on a predetermined dividing line. Based on the distances measured, a slit is formed on the first substrate by cutting the first substrate along the dividing line while leaving a portion of a predetermined thickness uncut. The first substrate is then broken along the slit. With this arrangement, it is possible to cut the substrates while leaving a portion of an appropriate thickness uncut irrespective of unevenness of the thickness or waviness of the first substrate.

  • Patent number: 5237439
Abstract: A plastic-substrate liquid crystal display device has, on inner faces of a pair of plastic substrates 3 for sandwiching liquid crystals 10, a hard coat 4 made of an organic material, an SiOx undercoat 5, and an ITO electrode 6 in this order. Boron (B) is contained in the material of the hard coat 4. It is thus possible to enhance the adhesion property of the SiOx undercoat 5 and the ITO electrode 6 with respect to the substrate 3 and to prevent the occurrence of cracks therein.

  • Patent number: 5126866
Abstract: In a supertwist type liquid crystal display device using a supertwist type liquid crystal display cell and an optical compensation plate made of phase difference plates of uniaxial oriented polymer film, the phase difference plates include more than two phase difference plates laminated and disposed on one side or both sides of the liquid crystal display cell with various suitable disposition conditions, so that the whiteness level of the display can be improved. In one example, they are placed so that the retardation value of each of the phase difference plates is added and a cross angle between the slow axis of the first phase difference plate and the slow axis of the nth phase difference plate is 20.degree. to 40.degree., and a further cross angle between the slow axis of the first phase difference plate and the rubbing axis of the substrate adjacent to the liquid crystal display cell is in a range from 70.degree. to 90.degree..
