  • Publication number: 20030191981
Abstract: The present invention relates to an optical recording medium and optical recording medium record/playback apparatus and method, for managing defective areas in a rewritable optical recording medium. Particularly, the present invention adds a linear replacement control (LRC) bit to a secondary defective list (SDL) entry to discriminate a defective block information that is listed at the SDL entry according to a linear replacement algorithm from a defective block information that is listed at the SDL entry according to a skipping algorithm. This allows the optical recording medium record/playback apparatus to transmit correct information to a host.

  • Patent number: 6625094
Abstract: A method for real time recording and playback of data to and from an optical recording medium, and a method for managing a file thereof is disclosed. In the present invention, the host controls real time data writing by providing a signal requesting for information on a defective area to the device for recording/playback of data to/from an optical disk before providing a write command. Accordingly, the write command is generated such that data is not written on the defective areas, based upon the returned information on the defective area. Alternatively, the host may first provide a write command to the device for recording/playback of data to/from an optical disk, upon which information on defective areas is returned. Thus, the host generates and provides a new write command such that data is not written on a defective area based upon the returned information on the defective area.

  • Patent number: 6611483
Abstract: Device and method for recording a data on an optical recording medium, the device including a controller for transmitting a data to be written, if the data to be written is produced, together with a control signal, determining that a data in a block of the sector the data to be written is valid if the data to be written is a sector unit data, marking a result of the determination as identification information in the control signal, and transmitting the identification information, and a data writing part for identifying the identification information in the control signal from the controller, and writing the data from the controller in the sector designated by the control signal directly, if the identification information indicates that the data in the block having the sector the data to be written therein is not valid, thereby reducing data writing failure caused by failure of reading data in sectors in a block other than the sector the data to be written therein, and enhancing a system performance in writing

  • Patent number: 6526522
Abstract: A defect area management method of an optical recording medium is disclosed. The present method is capable of managing a defective areas by storing information of defective blocks in the user block upon formatting as well as information of defective replacement blocks by extension of the user area by slipping.

  • Patent number: 6418100
Abstract: Method for formatting, and managing a defective area of, a rewritable optical recording medium when a secondary defect list (SDL) is converted into a primary defect list (PDL) without certification by converting only sector numbers of first sectors of the defective blocks listed on the SDL into the PDL. If the defective sector thus listed of the PDL is encountered during writing/reading thereafter, a block (=16 sectors) containing the defective sector is subjected to slipping replacement.

  • Patent number: 6414923
Abstract: Method for recording/reproducing a data to/from a rewritable optical recording medium, including the steps of (1) conducting data writing/reading to/from a defective block if the defective block is encountered during a realtime writing/reading, and (2) conducting data writing/reading to/from a replacement block of the defective block if the defective block is encountered during a non-realtime writing/reading, whereby simplifying interface between the host and the optical disk recording/reproducing device, particularly in realtime writing/reproducing, that permits to reduce a burden on the host.

  • Patent number: 6385736
Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing defect areas of a rewritable optical recording medium. Upon receiving a write or read command from a host, the defect areas management apparatus decodes a PID of a position being currently traced by an optical pickup, generates the resultant physical sector number of the current position and compares it with a physical sector number of a defect area stored in a DMA storage unit. If the two physical sector numbers are the same, the defect areas management apparatus does not write or read data on a sector of the position traced by the optical pickup. Therefore, the defect areas management apparatus is capable of efficiently managing defect areas of the optical recording medium.
