The apparatus for driving the LCD device includes: a liquid crystal panel including a plurality of unit pixels composed of 4-color sub-pixels; a data driver to transmit a video data signal to individual sub-pixels; a gate driver to transmit a scan pulse to the sub-pixels; a data converter to generate a histogram using a gray difference of input 3-color source data, to convert the 3-color source data into 4-color data according to a gain value extracted from the histogram, and to output the 4-color data; and a timing controller to transmit the 4-color data received from the data converter to the data driver and to control the gate driver and the data driver.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for driving an LCD device is provided. The apparatus includes an LCD panel that is comprised of red, green, blue and white sub-pixels. A data converter converts input data of three colors into input data of four colors. A data driver converts the input data of four colors into a video signal, and supplies the video signal to each sub-pixel. A gate driver supplies a scan pulse to each sub-pixel. A timing controller arranges the input data of four colors supplied from the data converter and then supplies the arranged data to the data driver. A backlight unit is comprised of LEDs of at least five colors to emit the light to the LCD panel. A backlight controller controls the backlight unit in accordance with the input data of three colors and the sub-frame control signal.

The LCD includes a liquid crystal display panel divided into areas, lamps, an arithmetic unit, and a lamp driver. Fewer lamps are present than the number of areas. The arithmetic unit scans pixels of each area, extracts a peak value of the gray level of pixels of the area, and calculates a maximum peak brightness value and an average value of the area. The lamp driver controls the brightness of the lamps in accordance with the average value and the maximum peak brightness value.

Compressed data of the current frame and the compressed data of a previous frame from the frame memory are restored. The restored data of the previous frame is compared with the restored data of the current frame to determine a modulated portion for the current frame in accordance with the comparison result. The current frame data is modulated by adding the modulated portion to the current frame data. Only a single frame memory is disposed within the driving apparatus.
