  • Publication number: 20220168486
Abstract: A system for collecting plasma comprises a separator to separate whole blood from a donor into a plasma product and a second blood component, an anticoagulant line to combine anticoagulant with the whole blood, a touchscreen, and a controller. The controller is configured to receive donor parameters electronically from a donor management system. The controller is configured to use a target volume for raw plasma which is based at least in part on donor height and weight used to calculate total donor blood volume, the target volume for raw plasma based on the total donor blood volume. The controller is configured to control the system to operate draw and return phases to withdraw whole blood from a donor and return the second blood component to the donor until a volume of raw plasma in the collection container equals the target volume of raw plasma.

  • Patent number: 11311823
Abstract: Blood in a separation chamber is separated into a red blood cell layer, a plasma constituent, and a mononuclear cell-containing layer. A portion of the plasma constituent exits the chamber via a plasma outlet, while a first portion of the red blood cell layer exits via a red blood cell outlet. A second portion of the red blood cell layer exits the chamber via the red blood cell outlet and is collected. At least a portion of the collected red blood cell layer may then be conveyed to the chamber via the red blood cell outlet to convey at least a portion of the mononuclear cell-containing layer out of the chamber via the plasma outlet for collection. A second portion of the plasma constituent may be conveyed out of the chamber via the plasma outlet to more fully collect the mononuclear cell-containing layer without the use of collected plasma.

  • Patent number: 11285251
Abstract: A plasmapheresis system and a method for operating a plasmapheresis system are provided by which the volume/weight of anticoagulated plasma that is collected is optimized. In one example, a nomogram is provided that utilizes the donor's hematocrit to calculate the volume/weight of raw plasma within a plasma product having the maximum volume permitted by the FDA nomogram. In a plasmapheresis procedure having multiple collection phases followed by a reinfusion cycle in which concentrated red blood cells are returned to the donor, the volume of plasma product to be collected is calculated prior to the start of each collection cycle to account for the donor's increasing hematocrit, thus resulting in a greater total volume of plasma product to be collected during the plasmapheresis procedure.

  • Publication number: 20220027629
Abstract: A characteristic of a blood product in a blood product container is determined. Using a smartphone, an image is acquired of a blood bag or tubing of the blood product container disposed in front of the smartphone. The image is processed using a processing circuit of the smartphone or a remote computer in wireless communication with the smartphone. The processing identifies a characteristic of the blood product from the image. A visual notification is generated on a display of the smartphone of the identified characteristic of the blood product.

  • Patent number: 11137344
Abstract: A fluid to be optically monitored may be optically mixed to modify the apparent color perceived by a colorimetric optical sensor device. The fluid is positioned within a fluid compartment of a vessel also including a contrast compartment adjacent to the fluid compartment. The contrast compartment is configured to have a contrast color with a known main wavelength that is different from the main wavelength of the fluid color. Light from a broadband light source of the colorimetric optical sensor device is reflected off of the vessel, with the received light being received by an optical spectrometer. The optical spectrometer analyzes the received light to determine a main wavelength of the received light, followed by a controller determining a characteristic of the fluid, which is based on the main wavelengths of the received light and the contrast color and the percentage of the vessel occupied by the fluid compartment.

The fluid separation chamber may be provided with first and second stages, with the first and second stages being positioned at different axial locations. In another embodiment, at least one of the stages may be provided with a non-uniform outer diameter about the rotational axis, which may define a generally spiral-shaped profile or a different profile for fractionating a fluid or fluid component. One or more of the stages may also have a varying outer diameter along the axis. The profile of the chamber may be provided by the chamber itself (in the case of rigid chambers) or by an associated fixture or centrifuge apparatus (in the case of flexible chambers).

  • Publication number: 20210282684
Abstract: A plasmapheresis system and a method for operating a plasmapheresis system are provided by which a volume of plasma product (i.e., anticoagulated plasma) so that that the targeted volume of pure plasma in the plasma product is determined based on donor-specific characteristics. In particular, the targeted amount of pure plasma to be collected is based on the weight, or the weight and the height, of the donor. The targeted volume of pure plasma to be collected, TVP, may be a multiple of the donor's weight. Alternatively, TVP may be a multiple of the donor's total blood volume, TBV, with the TBV of the donor being determined based on the donor's weight and height. A target volume for the plasma product to be collected, TVPP, is established, and separation of whole blood into a plasma component and a second component continues until the volume of plasma product in a collection container equals TVPP.
