  • Patent number: 8408901
Abstract: A tapered endodontic rotary file for shaping or cleaning a root canal in a tooth has one or more flutes spiraling along the length of the file. The diameters of the one or more flutes tapers in a non-uniform manner from a first diameter in a shank portion of the file to a smaller diameter in a tip portion of the file such that at least one flute region intermediate the shank portion and the tip portion has a diameter less than a straight line taper from the shank portion to the tip portion. The flutes can also be landed and the width of the lands can be varied along the length of the file. In particular, the width of the lands in the intermediate region are wider than the width in the tip or shank portion.

  • Patent number: 7993138
Abstract: An electronic device for locating the apex of a root canal within a tooth of a dental patient has a display screen on a display component to provide an image indicating when the apex of a root canal has been located. A free end of a first electrical lead is provided for placement within the root canal or in contact with an electrically conductive tool within the root canal. A free end of a second electrical lead is used to establishing a ground on a conductive portion of the dental patient such as a tissue surface within the mouth. The opposite ends of each of the leads is connected to the display component. Removeably attached to the display component is a lead carrier. • Patent number: 7604479
Abstract: A dental instrument comprising a handpiece with a threaded extension and a working tool for attachment to the extension includes a wrench mounted on the distal end of the handpiece for use in attaching the tool to the extension. The wrench comprises a nose piece mounted on the front end of the handpiece, said nose piece rotateable radially about the front end of the handpiece as well as longitudinally slidable forward of the distal end of the handpiece so that an opening in a front end of the nose piece extends over the hub of the tool. Rotating the extended nose piece radially around the front end of the handpiece causes the hub of the tool to rotate, attaching the tool to the threaded extension. The nose piece is then retracted to a storage position during use of the tool.

  • Publication number: 20080283526
Abstract: Individual elongated containers, preferably square or rectangular in cross section are provided for holding tools and materials necessary for a dental procedure. The containers all have structure on two or more sides thereof to allow them to be assembled together into a single structure so that the practitioner can assemble his own procedure kit. This allows the user to assemble a series of containers holding different sized devices or different devices in a small assembled structure for easy access, to vary the components of the structure as required for each procedure and to remove an empty container or a container with the incorrect contents from the assembly and replace it with a proper device or material. The containers are particularly configured to hold thin, elongated devices, such as a series of containers for different size endodontic files, gutta percha, swabs, absorbent paper points, posts, or other dental tools or materials.

  • Patent number: 7448867
Abstract: An apparatus for dispensing material during a dental or endodontic procedure includes a housing having a motor with an output. A needle heating member including a chamber may receive a prefilled needle of dispensing material. A heater at least substantially surrounds the chamber for heating the material in the needle. A plunger is used to expel the material from the needle during activation of the motor. A reusable protective sheath is provided for disposition on the outside of the housing. A method of manufacturing a needle for use and dispensing a material during a dental or endodontic procedure includes drawing a blank of metal having a closed distal end, bending the blank at a desired angle, and removing a portion of the drawn metal from the distal end to open the distal end thereby forming the dispensing needle.

  • Patent number: 6722882
Abstract: An ultrasonic dental instrument or tip is disclosed for performing endodontic procedures. The instrument has a hub adapted to be operatively coupled to the output of an ultrasonic handpiece and a shank portion extending from the hub. A first portion of the shank extends in a generally axial direction from the hub and tip portion extends from the first portion. The shank has a bend therein between the first portion and the tip portion ranging between about 90° and about 140°. One embodiment of the tip has an enlarged, bulbous free end, with the latter having an end face cross sectional area larger than the cross sectional area of the tip portion proximate the enlarged free end. The enlarged free end has an abrasive coating thereon so that upon activation of the instrument by the transducer, the tip portion and the enlarged free end vibrates in a plane including the shank and tip portions.

  • Patent number: 6053735
Abstract: An improved endodontic procedure for preparation of root canals in teeth comprising the use of selected endodontic instruments such as files or burs in a prescribed series of steps. These steps include using a series of successively smaller instruments in a first crown-down procedure, using the instruments in a reverse sequence in a serial step-back procedure, followed by finishing the preparation of the canal with selected instruments in a second crown-down procedure. Conventional root canal files of standard taper or variably-tapered files may be used in the practice of the method.

  • Patent number: 4836780
Abstract: A series of instruments for use in cleaning and shaping the root canal of a tooth is disclosed. The instruments are files having increasing tapers on sequentially-used files, with all of the files having the same, or nearly the same, small diameter at the tip of the cutting surface. The files create an increasingly tapered aperture in the root canal, which is exactly sized to admit a selected one of a set of variable taper filling materials available for filling a prepared root canal. Each file also has a safe edge to eliminate perforating the root canal, a rounded tip to eliminate ledging, and a handle shaped to provide a tactile reference to the orientation of the safe edge.
