  • Patent number: 4836986
Abstract: A method of treating a contact lens wherein the lens is contacted with a solution containing a biguanide or water-soluble salt thereof, in combination with a borate buffer system, said biguanide having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is from 1 to 500, said biguanide being present in an amount from 0.000001 to 0.0003 weight percent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 8, 1988
Date of Patent: June 6, 1989
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Francis X. Smith, Thomas M. Riedhammer
  • Patent number: 4786436
Abstract: An improved wetting solution for contact lenses is disclosed. The solution contains collagen as a wetting agent and preferably a biguanide as a preservative.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 14, 1987
Date of Patent: November 22, 1988
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Francis X. Smith
  • Patent number: 4783488
Abstract: An improved wetting solution for contact lenses is disclosed. The solution contains gelatin as a wetting agent in an amount less than 1% by weight of the solution so that the viscosity of the solution is substantially less than 15 CPS at 25.degree. C. The solution may also contain a biguanide as a preservative.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 25, 1987
Date of Patent: November 8, 1988
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Francis X. Smith
  • Patent number: 4758595
Abstract: A preserving solution comprising a microbicidally or fungicidally effective amount of a biguanide or water-soluble salt thereof, in combination with a buffer system, said biguanide having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is from 1 to 500, said biguanide being present in an amount from 0.000001 to 0.0003 weight percent, useful for preserving, for example, a cosmetic formulation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 14, 1986
Date of Patent: July 19, 1988
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Francis X. Smith, Thomas M. Riedhammer
  • Patent number: 4690773
Abstract: Proteinaceous tear films and debris are removed from contact lenses with aqueous solutions of a protease derived from a Bacillus, Streptomyces, or Aspergillus microorganism. The solutions are substantially odor-free, non-allergenic, require no activator/stabilizer and are completely water soluble.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 7, 1986
Date of Patent: September 1, 1987
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Francis X. Smith
  • Patent number: 4655957
Abstract: This invention relates to a cleansing composition comprising a particulate hydrophilic polymer or copolymer or mixture thereof and methods for cleaning various articles including contact lenses using the composition disclosed herein.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 28, 1986
Date of Patent: April 7, 1987
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Richard C. Chromecek, Lai Ogunbiyi, Thomas M. Riedhammer, Francis X. Smith
  • Patent number: 4614549
Abstract: Contact lenses are both cleaned and disinfected in aqueous solutions of proteolytic enzyme in a single-step by heating to a temperature of between 60.degree. and 100.degree. C. The cleaning and disinfecting process which may be conducted in one hour or less performs favorably against conventional methods wherein cleaning and disinfecting are conducted separately over a time period of up to twelve hours.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 9, 1985
Date of Patent: September 30, 1986
    Assignee: Bausch & Lomb Incorporated
Inventors: Lai Ogunbiyi, Thomas M. Riedhammer, Francis X. Smith
  • Patent number: 4537746
Abstract: Improved methods of disinfecting and/or preserving contact lenses comprises treating said lenses with an effective concentration of a solution comprising a biguanide or a water soluble salt of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are selected hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, --SO.sub.2 R.sub.4, carboxyl or hydroxyl where R.sub.4 is --NH.sub.2, --NHR', --NR'R", --OR' or --O--aryl in which R' and R" are alkyl or alkoxy; R.sub.2 is hydrogen or halogen and X is hydrogen or alkyl, provided that when R.sub.2 is halogen then both R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are hydrogen and X is alkyl. The method provides for disinfecting and/or preserving contact lenses wherein the monomeric biguanide-containing solutions offer a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity with nominal binding and concentrating onto lens surfaces and low levels of eye tissue irritation or inflammation.
