  • Patent number: 6704288
Abstract: A hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) access network manager is formed to support a variety of functions related to the operation and management of an HCF access plant. The network manager includes a topology discovery module that can function either automatically, or under control of a command from the access network manager, to poll individual network elements to identify their type and location, thus creating a topological map of the network. The polling can be accomplished in either the analog or digital domain.

  • Patent number: 6684194
Abstract: A subscriber identification system is presented in which subscriber selection data including channel changes, volume changes, and time-of-day viewing information is used to identify a subscriber from a group of subscribers. In one instance, the subscriber viewing data is recorded and a signal processing algorithm such as a Fourier transform is used to produce a processed version of the subscriber selection data. The processed version of the subscriber selection data can be correlated with stored common identifiers of subscriber profiles to determine which subscriber from the group is presently viewing the programming. A neural network or fuzzy logic can be used as the mechanism for identifying the subscriber from clusters of information which are associated with individual subscribers.

  • Publication number: 20030040324
Abstract: A method and system for providing location-based information to a mobile or fixed subscriber. A subscriber requests information through an information manager which maintains a location-indexed database (L-database) containing web servers addresses of entities hosting information of interest to the subscriber. The subscriber requests the information through a handheld device ( wireless phone or PDA) or through a desktop or laptop PC. The information manager receives also the subscriber's current location information in terms of street address or geo-location and queries the L-database to identify entities hosting the requested information. The information is then retrieved directly from the identified servers and presented to the subscriber in a format suitable to the subscriber device.

  • Patent number: 6457010
Abstract: A subscriber characterization system is presented in which the subscriber's requests are transmitted to a server which fulfills those requests and performs monitoring of the subscriber requests for subsequent characterization of the subscriber. Monitoring includes maintaining records of the time duration programming is watched, the volume at which the programming is listened to, and any available information regarding the type of programming, including category and sub-category of the programming. The characterization system works across a network to extract textual information related to the programming from closed captioning data, electronic program guides, or other text sources associated with the programming. The extracted information is used to form program characteristics vectors. The programming characteristics vectors can be used in combination with the subscriber selection data to form a subscriber profile.
