  • Patent number: 8935665
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for managing a software partition in logical partitioned data processing system. A virtual root process is created for the software partition, wherein the virtual root process functions as a root process for the software partition. • Patent number: 8601147
Abstract: The present invention provides a computer storage server implemented method for generating attribute streams. The storage server receives a request from an application to write data to at least one storage object, the request having a request type. The storage server then updates an attribute stream with metadata associated with the at least one storage object. The storage server also updates the attribute stream with the at least one checksum, such that the attribute stream is associated with the at least one storage object. The storage server determines the request type to be one selected from among the group consisting of an email type, a file transfer protocol type, and a hypertext transfer protocol type. Responsive to a determination that the request type is among one selected from the group consisting of an email type, a file transfer protocol type, and a hypertext transfer protocol type, the storage server verifies the application.

  • Patent number: 8549543
Abstract: A WPAR is migrated. Responsive to starting a checkpoint process, data and control information is collected and stored for IPC objects in the WPAR. Responsive to receiving a request to restart the WPAR, a type of IPC object is determined. Responsive to a determination that the IPC object is not an IPC shared memory object, a kernel handle that a process wants to be used for a new IPC object is registered. A request to create a new IPC object comprising a name uniquely associated with the IPC object and a WPAR identifier is issued. An entry that matches the name and WPAR identifier is identified and a virtual kernel handle is retrieved. The new IPC object is created. The virtual kernel handle is mapped to a real kernel handle and returned to the process. Data and control information is retrieved and overlaid onto the new IPC object.

  • Patent number: 8527650
Abstract: A computer implemented method, computer program product, and system for creating a checkpoint of a stream. A stream checkpoint request to create the checkpoint of the stream is received, wherein the stream is used by a process as a communications path, and wherein the communications path is modified by a set of modules. In response to identifying the identity of each module in the set of modules, the identity of each module in the set of modules is stored in the checkpoint. In response to identifying an order of the set of modules, the order of the set of modules is stored in the checkpoint. In response to sending a stream checkpoint message to each module in the set of modules, module data is received from each module in the set of modules to form received module data. The received module data is stored in the checkpoint.

  • Patent number: 8495573
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for checkpoint and restart of a process. In one embodiment, a process shell representing a restartable process is created on an arrival server in response to identifying a process on a departure server that is a restartable process. The process shell is frozen. A name of the restartable process, an identifier of the restartable process, and an identifier of a parent process of the restartable process is assigned to the process shell. The process shell is then unfrozen and exits. A parent process restarts the restartable process when the process shell exits.

  • Patent number: 8397106
Abstract: A method, system, and computer usable program product for detecting a no progress state of an application are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A resource usage and an output of a set of applications are monitored. The resource usage and the output are measured to determine a resource usage value and an output value at a given time. A determination is made whether the resource usage value is included in a sub-range of a resource usage scale and the output value is included in a sub-range of an output scale where the sub-range of the resource usage scale corresponds to the sub-range of the output scale.

  • Patent number: 8392765
Abstract: A system, and computer usable program product for condition based detection of a no progress state of an application are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A resource usage and an output of a set of applications including the application are monitored. The resource usage and the output are measured to determine a resource usage value and an output value at a first time. A present condition is detected under which the set of applications is executing. A determination is made whether the resource usage value is included in a sub-range of a resource usage scale and the output value is included in a sub-range of an output scale where the sub-range of the resource usage scale corresponds to the sub-range of the output scale for the present condition. The no progress state of the application is detected if the determination is negative.

  • Patent number: 8386995
Abstract: Automated or autonomic techniques for managing deployment of one or more resources in a computing environment based on varying workload levels. The automated techniques may comprise predicting a future workload level based on data associated with the computing environment. Then, an estimation is performed to determine whether a current resource deployment is insufficient, sufficient, or overly sufficient to satisfy the future workload level. Then, one or more actions are caused to be taken when the current resource deployment is estimated to be insufficient or overly sufficient to satisfy the future workload level. Actions may comprise resource provisioning, resource tuning and/or admission control.

  • Patent number: 8266636
Abstract: Migrating a workload partition (WPAR) is provided. Responsive to receiving a request to checkpoint the WPAR, a list of virtual identifiers used by the WPAR to refer to IPC objects is generated and stored. Each virtual identifier corresponds to an IPC object and to a real identifier used by a kernel that corresponds to the IPC object. IPC object data and control information is collected and stored. Each process in the WPAR stores per process data. Responsive to receiving a request to restart the WPAR, the virtual identifier that the WPAR wants to be used is registered. A new IPC object is created by a kernel. The kernel maps a real identifier used by the kernel for the new IPC object to the registered virtual identifier. The restart process retrieves IPC data and control information and overlays it on the new IPC object. The per process data is restored.

  • Patent number: 8156510
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for dynamically loading a module into an application address space. In response to receiving a checkpoint signal by a plurality of threads associated with an application running in a software partition, the plurality of threads rendezvous to a point outside an application text associated with the application. Rendezvousing the plurality of threads suspends execution of application text by the plurality of threads. The application text is moved out of an application address space for the application to form an available application address space. The available application address space is an address space that was occupied by the application text. A software module is moved into the available application address space.

  • Patent number: 8135985
Abstract: A computer implemented method, a tangible computer storage medium, and a data processing system provide high availability support for virtual machines in a logical partitioned platform. A monitoring system detect a failure in the virtual machine. Partition management firmware then restarts the virtual machine in a consistency failover image node utilizing a consistency failover image. If a subsequent failure of the virtual machine is detected within a predetermined time, partition management firmware restarts the virtual machine in a boot failover image node utilizing a boot failover image.

  • Patent number: 8108549
Abstract: In a computer system divided into multiple separate workload partitions, wherein at least one of the partitions contains multiple applications, and a loopback interface is made available to each partition, a method is provided for routing packets from one application to another application. In one embodiment of the invention, each packet to be routed from one application to another application in the same home partition comprises a first packet, and all other packets comprise second packets. The method comprises the steps of assigning the same pre-specified IP address to each of the first packets, and routing each of the first packets from its home partition to a loopback interface at the IP network processing layer. The method further includes marking the first packets to identify the home partition of each first packet, and directing the marked first packets to a mechanism configured to deliver each first packet only to its home partition, in response to the markings.

  • Patent number: 7950019
Abstract: A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer program product for a checkpoint process associated with a device driver in a workload partitioned environment. In response to initiation of a checkpoint process, a stream is frozen. The stream comprises a set of kernel modules driving a device. Freezing the stream prevents any module in the set of kernel modules from sending any messages, other than a checkpoint message, to another module in the set of kernel modules. The message block for each module in the set of kernel modules is updated with internal data to form a restart message. The internal data is data describing a state of the module in the set of kernel modules.
