  • Patent number: 6723431
Abstract: Multilayer metallized polyolefin film structures having improved barrier properties and reduced water vapor transmission and oxygen transmission properties are provided. The film structures include a polyolefin substrate having a first and second side, a metal layer adjacent to the first side of the substrate and substantially coextensive therewith and a coating layer adjacent to the metal layer and substantially coextensive therewith. The coating layer includes a coating selected from the group consisting of polyvinylidene chloride, polyvinyl alcohol and acrylic coating.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 24, 2000
Date of Patent: April 20, 2004
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: William Mallory, Robert Migliorini, Larry Parr
  • Patent number: 6703134
Abstract: A multilayer film has a core layer, such as a biaxially oriented polypropylene layer, and an adhesion promoting layer formed from a graft copolymer of syndiotactic polypropylene and a monomer, such as maleic anhydride, which has hydrophilic functionality. The adhesion promoting layer may be metallized to provide a barrier to oxygen and water vapor. The adhesion promoting layer may also render the surface of the film more receptive to printing inks, laminating adhesives, primeness overcoats and the like.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 31, 2000
Date of Patent: March 9, 2004
    Assignee: ExxonMobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Larry A. Parr, Robert G. Peet
  • Patent number: 6649279
Abstract: A metallized multilayer film structure includes a core layer of a film-forming polyolefin having a first side and a second side. A metal receiving skin layer may be disposed on the first side of the core layer. A metal layer may be deposited on the surface of the metal receiving skin layer opposite the core layer. A topcoat layer may be disposed on the surface of the metal layer opposite the metal receiving skin layer. A polymer skin layer may be disposed on the second side of the core layer. The film structure may optionally include one or more tie layers. The film structure may also optionally include a primer layer interposed between the topcoat layer and the metal layer. The present metallized multilayer film structure may be suitable for use as a monoweb to package product as opposed to being used in a lamination. The film structure exhibits superior scratch resistance and resistance to other types of damage. The film structure may be directly surface printed and then used to directly package product.

  • Patent number: 5604042
Abstract: A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric substrate adapted to receive an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the oxygen barrier. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier can be provided by the carrier web or incorporated into the cellulosic material, which is preferably box board.

  • Patent number: 5512338
Abstract: A polymeric film structure having improved oxygen, flavor/odor, grease/oil and moisture barrier characteristics is disclosed. The structure includes a polymeric core sandwiched between an oxygen barrier on one side thereof and a moisture barrier on the other side of the polymeric core. The oxygen barrier includes polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with aldehyde containing cross-linking agents in the presence of a catalytic amount of an inorganic acid, preferably sulfuric acid. The moisture barrier is a coating of polyvinylidene chloride, which also enhances the oxygen barrier of the polymeric film structure.
