  • Publication number: 20090032352
Abstract: The present invention is a transfer case incorporating the use of a single actuator having an input member selectively engagable to a primary output member, an actuator operatively associated with a clutch assembly and a range selector, a first one-way clutch operably associated with the actuator, and a second one-way clutch operably associated with the actuator. When the actuator is actuated in a first direction, the first one-way clutch will activate the range selector to couple the input member and the primary output member to have either of a direct drive ratio, or a reduced gear ratio. When the actuator is actuated in a second direction, the actuator will actuate the second one-way clutch to engage the clutch assembly, transferring rotational force from the primary output member to a secondary output member.

  • Publication number: 20080149451
Abstract: The present invention is a clutch assembly which incorporates brushless motor technology to engage a clutch pack to cause two shafts to rotate in unison. The present invention is a clutch actuation assembly having a clutch apply member, a base plate disposed about an axis, a cam plate disposed about the axis, and at least one cam, operably associated with the base plate and the cam plate. The present invention also includes at least one load transferring member operably associated with the at least one cam, as well as an actuator for providing relative rotation between the cam plate and the base plate about the axis, causing the at least one load transferring member to move with respect to the at least one cam, and the cam plate to translate along the axis actuating said clutch apply member.

  • Publication number: 20070179010
Abstract: A two-speed transfer case includes a planetary gear assembly, and a shift sleeve that is used for selecting either the reduced speed gear ratio, in which the torque from the input is transferred though the planetary gears, or the direct drive speed ratio, in which the input and output shafts are coupled directly together. The carrier of the planetary gear assembly is equipped with a surface that is capable of receiving a band brake that is disposed thereabout. A lever composed to two pieces, a brake apply arm and a cam follower, applies the brake band, and in doing so controls retardation of the planet carrier, controlling the speed of the carrier, and thus, controlling the output of the planetary gear assembly.

  • Publication number: 20070137966
Abstract: An electrohydraulic clutch includes a bidirectional electric motor, a hydraulic circuit and a multiple plate friction clutch pack. The bidirectional electric motor drives a ball screw through a gear reduction assembly. An electric brake on the motor output may be energized to inhibit its rotation. Alternatively, an anti-back drive wrap-spring assembly may be utilized on the motor output. The ball screw output bi-directionally translates a master piston of the hydraulic circuit which in turn advances and retracts an annular slave piston disposed adjacent the friction clutch pack. Hence, actuation of the electric motor displaces hydraulic fluid and compresses or relaxes the friction clutch pack, thereby transferring or inhibiting torque.

  • Publication number: 20060065509
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a self-bleed mechanism for a hydraulic system comprising a clutch pack hydraulically actuated by one or more fluid passageways; an elongated cylinder operably connected to the fluid passageways; a piston slidably disposed in the elongated cylinder where the piston controls actuation of the clutch pack by sliding in the elongated cylinder; and a valve connected to the elongated cylinder, wherein air inside of the elongated cylinder is vented through the valve. The valve is a check valve which vents to the general sump and includes a ball which rests in a tapered valve seat, and the ball is held in place with a spring. The piston has a nozzle on an end that unseats said check valve.

  • Patent number: 6905008
Abstract: An electromagnetic clutch assembly having a solenoid activated ball ramp operator provides reduced power consumption and improved control. The electromagnetic clutch assembly includes a primary or pilot friction clutch pack and a secondary or main friction clutch pack. An annular solenoid coil cooperates with an annular operator or plunger. When the coil is energized, the annular plunger translates and compresses the primary or pilot friction clutch pack. Activation of the pilot clutch pack retards motion of one of the members of the ball ramp operator which, in turn, compresses a secondary or main friction clutch pack disposed across the input and output members.

  • Patent number: 5890986
Abstract: The transmission of the present invention includes a multi-speed geartrain comprised of an input shaft, a mainshaft, and a plurality of constant-mesh gearsets arranged for selectively coupling the mainshaft to the input shaft for driven rotation at various speed ratios. The mainshaft can be selectively coupled to the power transfer arrangement for establishing two alternative power transmission routes. In particular, the range shift mechanism is provided for establishing a high-range power transmission route and a low-range power transmission route from the mainshaft to a quill shaft which, in turn, drives the interaxle differential. The torque delivered by the quill shaft is split by the interaxle differential between the front and rear drivelines to establish the full-time four-wheel high-range and low-range drive modes.

  • Patent number: 5836847
Abstract: A planetary gear assembly is disclosed having a sun gear fixed for rotation with an input, a ring gear, and a planet carrier fixed for rotation with an output and which has a plurality of planet gears rotatably supported thereon that mesh with the sun gear and the ring gear. To establish the high and low-range drive connections between the input and the output, a first range sleeve is supported for rotation with the input and is movable between a neutral position and an engaged position whereat the input is coupled to the planet carrier. In addition, a second range sleeve is supported for rotation with the ring gear and is movable between a neutral position and an engaged position whereat the ring gear is coupled to a stationary brake plate. Accordingly, the high-range drive connection between the input and the output is established when the first range sleeve is in its engaged position and the second range sleeve is in its neutral position.
