Abstract: A bariatric adapter for a portable patient-transport gurney provides a wider, secure and comfortable surface for carrying larger patients. The adapter may be constructed in multiple segments so that adjustments of the gurney (e.g., elevating head/torso support or leg supports) can still be used. The adapter does not require modifications to the gurney, so it can be removed when not needed. However, smaller patients may also find the wider bed more comfortable, so it may be left attached for all users.
