  • Patent number: 6368443
Abstract: Starch-based corrugating adhesives of the carrier, no-carrier and carrier-no-carrier type having improved green strength and water resistance are prepared by adding hemicellulose to the adhesive composition. When the adhesive is the carrier type or the carrier-no-carrier type, the hemicellulose can be extracted from corn fiber in situ during the process of preparing the carrier phase.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 9, 1994
Date of Patent: April 9, 2002
    Assignee: Corn Products International, Inc.
Inventors: Larry E. Fitt, James J. Pienkowski, Jack R. Wallace
  • Patent number: 6287412
Abstract: Corrugating adhesives of the carrier, no-carrier and carrier-no-carrier type having excellent dry pin adhesion, green strength and improved water resistance are prepared with solubilized fiber as a complete or partial substitute for starch. The adhesive composition contains solubilized fiber and, optionally, from about 0.1% to about 99% added starch by weight based on total solubilized fiber and added starch. When the adhesive is the carrier type or the carrier-no-carrier type, the fiber, preferably corn fiber, can be solubilized in situ during the process of preparing the carrier phase.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 14, 1994
Date of Patent: September 11, 2001
    Assignee: CPC International, Inc.
Inventors: J. E. Todd Giesfeldt, Larry E. Fitt, James J. Pienkowski, Jack R. Wallace
  • Patent number: 5503668
Abstract: Corrugating adhesives of the carrier, no-carrier and carrier-no-carrier type having excellent dry pin adhesion, green strength and improved water resistance are prepared with solubilized plant fiber as a complete or partial substitute for starch. The adhesive composition contains polyvinyl alcohol, solubilized fiber and, optionally, from about 0.1% to about 99% added starch by weight based on total solubilized fiber and added starch. When the adhesive is the carrier type or the carrier-no-carrier type, the fiber can be solubilized in situ during the process of preparing the carrier phase.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 5385608
Abstract: Absorbable dusting powders suitable for medical, consumer and industrial applications such as lubricating gloves and medical apparatus are prepared by treating starch with a hypochlorite to remove protein and oxidize some of the hydroxyl groups. The modified starch dusting powders are free flowing and are characterized by a protein content of less than about 0.15% by weight and hydroxyl groups oxidized to a level of from about 0.03 to about 0.5% by weight. Protein content can be reduced further by washing with water.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 16, 1994
Date of Patent: January 31, 1995
    Assignee: CPC International Inc.
Inventors: Larry E. Fitt, Harry T. McNary

  • Patent number: 5187210
Abstract: A high speed corrugating adhesive having a carrier phase comprised of starch, modified starch or dextrin and polyvinyl alcohol in an aqueous emulsion wherein a cold water soluble, partially hydrolyzed, polyvinyl alcohol is used as a starting material. The polyvinyl alcohol is further hydrolyzed in situ to a degree of hydrolysis of more than about 95% by heating it in the presence of water, caustic, and starch, modified starch or dextrin. The carrier phase is admixed with a boron containing compound and a suspension of water and starch to prepare the corrugating adhesive for use in a corrugating machine.

  • Patent number: 5126334
Abstract: Absorbable dusting powders suitable for medical applications such as lubricating surgical gloves are prepared by treating starch with a hypochlorite to remove protein and oxidize some of the hydroxyl groups, and partially cross-linking the hypochlorite-treated starch with phosphorus oxychloride. The modified starch dusting powders are free flowing and are characterized by a protein content of less than about 0.15% by weight, hydroxyl groups oxidized to a level of from about 0.5 to about 0.05% by weight and a degree of cross-linking of other hydroxyl groups characterized by bound phosphorus levels of from about 200 to about 1200 ppm.
