  • Publication number: 20050141108
Abstract: A large, deployable space telescope (1) includes an optical system element (4) and a support structure (5) supporting the optical system element. The support structure is formed of a composite material (10) of boron and carbon fibers in a plastic resin matrix. The composite support structure has a net coefficient of thermal expansion within ±0.1 ppm/K at temperatures below 75K which enables diffraction limited performance of the telescope under cryogenic operational temperature variations.
