  • Publication number: 20100197261
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for wireless communications in a mobile electronic device. In one aspect, the mobile electronic device includes an antenna subsystem and a plurality of wireless communications modules. A method may involve supplying RF signals from each of the wireless communications modules to a single unit for manipulating the RF signals; and controlling the unit for manipulating RF signals to connect an RF signal of a selected one of the wireless communications modules to the antenna subsystem. The unit for manipulating RF signals may perform various kinds of RF signal processing or conditioning. Furthermore, the antenna system may include a phased array antenna. Besides portable computers such as laptop, notebook and netbook computers, the same principles are applicable to mobile electronic devices generally, including cellphones for example.

  • Patent number: 5914696
Abstract: An antenna system (20) provides low radio frequency interference (RFI) using an unbalanced antenna (21) comprised of three eighths wavelength whip antenna element (22) and associated counterpoise (23). Antenna counterpoise (23) may be formed by an EMI shielding conductor which is isolated at the frequency of operation of antenna system (20) from EMI shielding serving as host interface ground conductor (28) using resonant structure (25). Resonant structure (25) isolates antenna counterpoise (23) from host interface ground conductor (28) thereby improving antenna efficiency, and substantially eliminating RFI effects arising from use of antenna system (20).

  • Patent number: 5764492
Abstract: A radio device such as a radio modem having a radio shielding receptacle (10) with a base (16) and first and second sides (40, 42) and having side walls (14). A first circuit board (e.g. radio frequency circuit board 20) is mounted in the receptacle between the side walls, extending across the first side of the base. A second circuit board (e.g. logic circuit board 22) is mounted across the second side of the base such that the base of the receptacle separates the first and second circuit boards. A radio shielding housing (top assembly cover 26and bottom cover 38) surrounds the receptacle and the first and second circuit boards. In an aspect of the invention the device is dimensioned to conform to a Personal Computer Memory Card International Association standard and has an antenna connection (76). An elongate recess (74) extends between the two sides of the housing and the antenna connection is mounted within the recess.

  • Patent number: 5517069
Abstract: A battery contact and shielded enclosure having a high frequency energy filtering characteristic includes a battery contact having a movable portion and a fixed portion, the fixed portion mechanically coupled to a dielectric portion of a carrier having a conductive portion, and a chip capacitor electrically coupled between the fixed portion and the conductive portion the chip capacitor providing a low impedance path from the fixed portion to the conductive portion for high frequency energy on the battery contact.
