Patent number: 7832778Abstract: A touch bar (24) exit device (20) comprises a retractor element (50) disposed in the housing (22) for substantially restilinear movement. The retractor element (50) connects the touch bar (24) and the latch bolt (82) such that the retractor element (50) and the latch bolt (82) are moved toward the retracted position in response to movement of the touch bar (24). An electrically energizable locking mechanism (104) in the exit device (20) includes a reciprocating plunger (106) moving transverse to the retractor element (50). When energized, the locking mechanism (104) is operative to move the plunger (106) to the projected locking position to prevent retraction of the latch bolt. A time delay circuit is connected to the locking mechanism (104). A switch (120) actuated in response to movement of the touch bar (24) is connected to the time delay circuit for starting a predetermined time interval for temporarily delaying deenergization of the locking mechanism (104).Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 2008Date of Patent: November 16, 2010Assignee: Yale Security Inc.Inventors: Andrew Whitaker, John Steven Gray, Larry R. Hunt, Sidney J. Lampley, Michael L. Ensley

Patent number: 6427387Abstract: A removable mullion assembly comprises a fitting attached in the door opening for receiving an end of the mullion. The fitting houses a locking mechanism for selectively holding the mullion in place in the fitting. The locking mechanism comprises a latch bolt which in an extended position engages the end of the mullion and secures the mullion in the fitting. A key-operated mechanism, such as a cylinder lock, is operatively connected to the bolt for moving the latch bolt to the retracted position in response to turning the key in the cylinder. An actuating element is also provided which is activated by the end of the mullion as the mullion enters the retaining element for moving the bolt to the retracted position. The locking mechanism may further comprise a blocking element to block movement of the latch bolt from the extended position.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1999Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Yale Security, Inc.Inventor: Larry R. Hunt

Patent number: 5816017Abstract: A fire retardant door having a vertical latch stile extending the length of the stile for receiving the elements of a concealed vertical rod exit device therein along with an expanding, fire resistant material, preferably an intumescent compound, for sealing the opening when subjected to heat. The vertically reciprocating exit device rods disposed in the opening are operably connected to bolts disposed in the end of the stile openings, the bolts moveable in response to movement of the vertically reciprocating element from a retracted position within the door edge opening to an extended position to engage the door frame. The composition of the door and arrangement of the exit device elements is selected for a high fire rating, and preferably includes a wooden outer layer provided on each of the major faces of the door.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 1996Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: Yale Security Inc.Inventors: Larry R. Hunt, Daniel L. Hibbs, Mark A. Mason

Patent number: 5042851Abstract: Vertical concealed rods are attached to the respective ends of the slider of an exit device by adjustment bolts and bracket assemblies. Each bracket assembly is held adjacent the head of its adjustment bolt by a retainer. Once the cover of the latch mechanism is removed, the bolts are readily accessible from the outside of the door.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1990Date of Patent: August 27, 1991Assignee: Yale Security Inc.Inventor: Larry R. Patent number: 4305612Abstract: An apparatus for operating a door-latching and -unlatching device includes a thumbturn, a barrel cam, a shaft for coupling the thumbturn to the barrel cam to cause rotation of the barrel cam in response to movement of the thumbturn, a follower for the barrel cam and apparatus attaching the follower to the latch bolt to cause the latch bolt to move in response to actuation of the barrel cam. The illustrative barrel cam includes two generally diametrically opposed cam lobes such that rotation of the thumbturn either clockwise or counter-clockwise retracts the latch bolt. The follower includes a bar which lies against the cam surface of the barrel cam, and the latch bolt moving apparatus includes an actuator arm which is pivotally mounted adjacent one of its ends, the follower pin being mounted intermediate the actuator arm ends, the follower pin being supported adjacent the barrel cam, and the actuator arm further including a roller retractor actuator adjacent its other end.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1978Date of Patent: December 15, 1981Assignee: Von Duprin, Inc.Inventors: Larry R. Hunt, John R. Foster
