  • Patent number: 6097717
Abstract: The present invention concerns a process in a radio communication system which is arranged for packet data transmission according to a message-synchronized ALOHA protocol with reservation. Mobile stations in the system are arranged to send access requests to a base station during a reservation phase in a mobile radio system which uses this protocol. The base station is arranged to receive and comply with the access request from a first mobile station by sending thereto a channel reservation message (2) comprising a channel reservation (3). The base station is further arranged to receive access requests from at least a second mobile station for which channel reservation momentarily cannot be carried out. According to the process of the invention an access request received from the second mobile station is confirmed when channel reservation cannot be carried out in the usual manner.

  • Patent number: 6018661
Abstract: A method and device for measuring signal strengths by mobile stations in a wireless communication system are provided with minimal complexity. More particularly, while transmitting and receiving on a channel, scheduled signal strength measurements may be required. For instance, the received signal strength of broadcast information slots at the beginning of a superframe may be measured at predetermined times for several carriers. Also, the required signal strength measurements may be scheduled by a mobile station at times which minimize interference with the tasks of transmitting and receiving messages. Scheduled signal strength measurements may be delayed when the mobile is transmitting and receiving on a channel, and then more frequent signal strength measurements may be made when there is no communication. In other words, the signal strength measurements do not have to occur uniformly in time, but may be more frequently performed if they have been delayed.

  • Patent number: 5845215
Abstract: A method and device are provided for of supporting a plurality of mobile station operation modes in a wireless communication system by user control. Presently, communication protocols exist for supporting end user equipment which operates in a single mode of operation. However, it is desirable to combine protocols from various technologies to form end user equipment which operates in multiple modes of operation. Thereby, the present method allows the mobile station to operate in a multi-mode environment where a user can invoke a certain mode.

  • Patent number: 5729531
Abstract: A method for reassigning mobile stations a new phase within a channel is disclosed. In a communication system, a plurality of mobile stations attempt to communicate on a limited number of channels. The invention first uses a general allocation method to approximately evenly distribute the mobile stations on the available channels. After a mobile station begins active communication on the system, a second allocation method is used to change the phase of some mobile stations on a channel which has become heavily loaded. In addition, a message can also be sent to mobile stations assigned to but not yet actively communicating on the heavily loaded channel indicating that the mobile stations should change to a new channel.

  • Patent number: 5590133
Abstract: Apparatuses and mobile stations are described which provide packet data services in TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) cellular systems, based on providing shared packet data channels optimized for packet data. A first "integrated" embodiment utilizes the current cellular infrastructure to the extent possible consistent with functional and performance requirements. Shared packet data channels in base stations may be provided dynamically determined by demand. A packet data controller in each Mobile services Switching Center controls access to the packet data services. A packet data router in each MSC routes packets to and from the MSC service area. A backbone network interconnects packet data routers and Interworking Functions providing internetworking with external network(s).
