  • Patent number: 8868603
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes accessing a social graph that includes a plurality of nodes and edges, receiving an unstructured text query comprising an ambiguous n-gram, identifying nodes and edges that correspond to the ambiguous n-gram, generating a first set of structured queries corresponding to the identified second nodes and edges, receiving from the first user a selection of a first structured query form the first set, and generating a second set of structured queries based on the selected first structured query.

  • Patent number: 8849721
Abstract: A social networking system includes a mechanism for integrating user actions on objects outside of the social networking system in the social graph. External system operators include widgets that, when executed by user devices, record user interactions that correspond to a defined structure of actions and objects. Third party operators utilize a tool provided by the social networking system to define the structure of actions and objects. External actions are recorded by the social networking system for publishing to the social graph.

  • Publication number: 20140222924
Abstract: A method, at a computing device having one or more processors and memory storing programs for execution by the one or more processors, identifies a conversation including a plurality of participants. A sequence of edits to a content unit in a plurality of content units of the conversation is obtained from a first participant in the plurality of participants to produce a revised content unit. While a second participant of the plurality of participants is providing or editing a portion of the content unit, or viewing the portion of the content unit, the following conditions are imposed. When the second participant is a team member, the conversation is updated for the second participant with the revised content unit by providing the revised content unit to the second participant. When the second participant is a non-team member, updating the conversation for the second participant with the revised content unit is delayed.

  • Patent number: 8793593
Abstract: A social networking system includes a mechanism for integrating user actions on objects outside of the social networking system in the social graph. For example, streaming music on external systems may be integrated into the user experience on the social networking system. Third-party developers, in addition to administrators of the social networking system, may define objects and actions that enable integration of external music sources to be played and controlled using the social networking system while also providing socially relevant information to other users of the social networking system. Actions and objects recorded from these external user interactions are structured to enable aggregation and structured querying, which enables data visualizations of the information discoverable on the social graph. In this way, interesting information about users' actions outside of the domain of the social networking system may be shared and compared with other users on the social networking system.

  • Publication number: 20140136564
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes accessing a social graph that includes a plurality of nodes and edges, receiving an unstructured text query, identifying nodes and edges that correspond to n-grams of the text query, accessing a context-free grammar model, identifying grammars having query tokens that correspond to the identified nodes and edges, determining a score for each identified grammar, and then generating structured queries based on the identified grammars based on strings generated by the grammars.

  • Publication number: 20140108576
Abstract: Systems and methods of hosting electronic conversations are provided in which a plurality of conversations, each having an identified set of participants, is maintained. Responsive to a search query from a first participant of a first conversation in the plurality of conversations, a second conversation in the plurality of conversations is identified as relevant to the search query. All or a portion of the second conversation is formatted for display to the first participant. Each conversation in the plurality of conversations, including the second conversation, is an instant messaging conversation. Participants in each conversation in the plurality of conversations are instant messaging participants.

  • Patent number: 8700776
Abstract: A server system hosts a plurality of conversations. For a respective conversation the server system receives units of content from respective participants in the conversation. The server system receives a sequence of edits to a respective content unit of the conversation from at least one participant other than an initial author of the content unit to produce a revised content unit. The server system stores a respective timestamp for each distinct edit in the sequence of edits to the content unit, including distinct timestamps for at least first and second edits to the content unit. The server system updates the conversation with the revised content unit and automatically provides the updated conversation to the one or more server systems hosting conversations for the participants in the conversation.

  • Publication number: 20140067977
Abstract: System and methods for uploading media content in an instant messaging application are disclosed. In some implementations, a method includes, at a first electronic device having one or more processors and memory: obtaining a request by a first user to associate a media content item with a conversation between the first user and a second user. The conversation includes a message and one or more responses to the message. In some implementations, the method also includes, responsive to the request: (i) causing a thumbnail of the media content item to be displayed in-line in the conversation; and (ii) causing the media content item to be display to the second user, in response to a predefined user action by the second user. The thumbnail is displayed in a first resolution; and the media content item is displayed in a second resolution that is different than the first resolution.

  • Patent number: 8639762
Abstract: A server system hosts a plurality of conversations, each having an identified set of participants. For a respective conversation, the server provides content of the conversation to the participants of the conversation. The server receives content from each of a plurality of participants of the conversation and transmits the received content to the other participants of the plurality of participants. Upon an additional participant being added to the conversation, the server provides content of the conversation to the additional participant that includes all content provided to the identified set of participants, and adds the additional participant to the identified set of participants.

  • Patent number: 8527602
Abstract: A receiving from a first client a thumbnail of content selected by the user of the first client. The server provides the thumbnail to a second client and while providing the thumbnail to the second client, the server receives the content from the first client. After providing the thumbnail to the second client, the server receives an access request from the second client for the content. In response to receiving the access request the server provides the content to the second client. In some embodiments, the server sends a prioritization request to the first client to increase the priority of uploading the content in response to a request to access the content by a second client, and the uploading priority of the content at the first client is increased based on the prioritization request.
