  • Publication number: 20120032140
Abstract: A light-emitting diode (LED) (101). The LED (101) includes a plurality of portions including a p-doped portion (112), an intrinsic portion (114), and a n-doped portion (116). The intrinsic portion (114) is disposed between the p-doped portion (112) and the n-doped portion (116) and forms a p-i junction (130) and an i-n junction (134) The LED (101) also includes a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) structure (104) including a first metal layer (140), a second metal layer (144), and a dielectric medium disposed between the first metal layer (140) and the second metal layer (144). The metal layers of the MDM structure (104) are disposed about orthogonally to the p-i junction (130) and the i-n junction (134); the dielectric medium includes the intrinsic portion (114); and, the MDM structure (104) is configured to enhance modulation frequency of the LED (101) through interaction with surface plasmons that are present in the metal layers.

  • Publication number: 20110273756
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention relate to dynamically reconfigurable hologram comprising a phase-modulation layer and an intensity-control layer. The phase modulation layer comprises an electronically programmable erasable negative index material crossbar. The crossbar includes a first layer of approximately parallel nanowires (502) and a second layer of approximately parallel nanowires (504) that overlay the nanowires in the first layer. The nanowires in the first and second layers have substantially regularly spaced fingers. The crossbar also includes resonant elements (812) comprising a chalcogenide-based layer (1000) sandwiched between the nanowire in the first layer and the nanowire in the second layer.

  • Patent number: 4717228
Abstract: An optical directional coupler with amplification having first, second and third waveguides respectively intended for incoming light for bar coupling of light from the first waveguide and for cross coupling of light from the first waveguide. The waveguides are transparent to the wave length of the incoming light and have a characteristic refractive index in the coupling area. The coupler also includes waveguide sections constituting coupling elements for the first, second and third waveguides as well as electrodes. An arrangement is provided for achieving optical amplification of light passing through the first and the second waveguide in the bar coupling state of the directional coupler and amplification of the light passing through the first and the third waveguides in the cross coupling state of the directional coupler by feeding a current to the electrodes according to which coupling state is desired.
