    Abstract: A device for scanning the surface of an item comprising a scanning zone and means for projecting a pattern of light dots onto the surface to be scanned when it is in the scanning zone. Means are provided for detecting the pattern of light dots. Means are also provided for making a grey scale image of the surface, and means are provided for combining the light dot pattern with the grey scale image to create a two dimensional reproduction of the item that was scanned.
