    Abstract: A method for manipulating a piston within a cylinder of an internal combustion engine is described. The method comprises: sensing dynamic top dead centre (DTDC) and dynamic bottom dead centre (DBDC); and selectively engaging a first power transfer mechanism with the piston when DTDC is sensed and selectively disengaging the first power transfer mechanism from the piston when DBDC is sensed.
