  • Patent number: 5708072
Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing water-dilutable enamel paint binders based on oligourethane-acrylate copolymers. A specific monomer mixture is polymerized in the presence of a water-insoluble oligourethane obtained by reacting an aliphatic ester diol with a diisocyanate. Water dilutability is achieved by using (meth)acrylic acid. These enamel paint binders are used in combination with cross-linking components and if required other enamel paint binders to formulate baking enamels.

  • Patent number: 4366282
Abstract: Polymer dispersions characterized in that they contain N-methylol(meth)acrylamide groups, comprising30-65% by weight of methylmethacrylate,10-17% by weight of ethylacrylate,10-30% by weight of butylmethacrylate,5-20% by weight of styrene,3-10% by weight of N-methylol(meth)acrylamide,and containing as a coalescing agent from about 5 to 15% by weight, based on the dispersion, of a blend comprising20-65% by weight of a high boiling paint solvent such as 2,2,4-trimethylpentane-1,5-diol-monotrimethylacetate and80-35% by weight of ethylene glycol monoethyletheracetate, and/or ethylene glycol monobutyletheracetate, optionally in conjunction with basic varnishes based on cationic water-soluble acrylic copolymers, are described. The dispersions when used in coating compositions for coating wood surfaces provide a coating on wood having good mar resistance, hardness, and flexibility, while accentuating the wood grain and color.

  • Patent number: 4220744
Abstract: A process for the preparation of polymers by free-radical, bulk polymerization comprising charging a reaction vessel with from about 5 to 15 percent by weight of an alpha, beta-unsaturated monomer which does not, under the conditions of the reaction, undergo free-radical polymerization, e.g., an alkyl ester of fumaric or maleic acid; thereafter adding to the reaction vessel from about 95 to 85 percent by weight of an acrylic monomer which, under the conditions of the reaction, undergoes free-radical polymerization in bulk form, blended with a free-radical initiator and controlling said addition in order that the acrylic monomer is present in said reaction kettle in an amount of less than about 20 percent, and preferably less than about 5 percent, during the course of the reaction. The process proceeds without excessive exothermy, permitting the complete polymerization in a synthetic resin reactor.
