  • Publication number: 20110219951
Abstract: A method for mitigating mercury vapor emissions during storing, staging, handling and transportation of an unbroken mercury containing universal waste lamp. The method includes the step of: placing the unbroken mercury containing universal waste lamp wholly within a container for storage, staging, handling or transportation. The container has an opening for allowing the unbroken mercury containing universal waste lamp to be placed wholly within the container. The container also has impervious wall structure for preventing mercury vapors from passing therethrough. The method also includes the step of: placing a predetermined amount of an activated carbon media having an affinity for mercury vapors within the container to passively adsorb mercury vapors escaping from incidental breakage of the mercury containing universal waste lamp.

  • Publication number: 20070225540
Abstract: An apparatus for mitigating mercury vapor emissions during transportation of mercury containing universal waste between locations. The apparatus includes a container having a bottom, sidewall structure extending from the closed bottom, and an opening for allowing the mercury containing universal waste to be inserted into the container. The opening in the container is releasably closed by a cover when the apparatus is transported between locations. Activated carbon media is arranged in the container after the container is closed The activated carbon media has an affinity for mercury vapors escaping from the mercury containing universal waste during transportation of the apparatus between locations and thereby mitigates mercury vapors escaping from the apparatus. A method for mitigating mercury vapor emissions during transportation of mercury containing universal waste between locations is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5957397
Abstract: A process for economically handling spent mercury containing lamps in an efficient manner while protecting the environment against the release of mercury vapors into the atmosphere along with creation of non-toxic recyclable by-product materials therefrom is disclosed. The process includes the steps of: transporting a lamp crushing apparatus on a mobile vehicle to a site whereat mercury containing lamps are collected; loading the mercury containing lamps within a closed chamber defined by the lamp crushing apparatus; and, crushing the mercury containing lamps within the closed chamber while simultaneously extracting substantially all hazardous mercury vapors from the closed chamber during the crushing process to create non-toxic recyclable by-product materials from the lamps loaded into the closed chamber.
