  • Patent number: 9526260
Abstract: Disclosed are packaging systems and methods useful in extending the storage-life of foodstuff such as fresh fish. The packaging systems and methods can be used to transport or store the foodstuff for an extended period of time. The packaging systems preferably employee a high headspace and flexible architecture and may use a fuel cell to maintain a reduced oxygen level in a high carbon dioxide environment surrounding the foodstuff. Also disclosed are methods useful in extending the storage-life of foodstuff such as fresh fish. The methods can be used to transport or store the foodstuff for an extended period of time. The methods preferably use a low oxygen gas source to maintain a reduced oxygen level in the environment surrounding the foodstuff.

  • Publication number: 20150223479
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for stabilizing an oxygen dependent or oxygen-labile pigment from discoloration, and for maintaining the freshness and preventing discoloration of a foodstuff comprising the oxygen-labile pigment. In some embodiments, the method comprises (1) reducing the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere of a sealed container comprising the pigment to a level such that the oxygen will not discolor the pigment when CO2 is introduced into the container, and (2) introducing CO2 into the sealed container while retaining or further reducing the oxygen concentration in the atmosphere of the sealed container. Systems useful in the methods disclosed herein.

  • Publication number: 20140208779
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to mechanically refrigerated retail and vending display systems and methods or use for extending the shelf-life of perishable products in the retail or vending setting. This is accomplished by maintaining an appropriate modified and controlled atmosphere (MA/CA) environment for the perishable product in a retail or vending display unit. The systems and methods of the invention maintain the MA/CA environment for a time period of 10 days or longer, wherein the marketable shelf-life of a perishable product is at least doubled. The systems may also operate in a power generation/power production mode, such that the fuel cells maintain the MA/CA environment while providing both primary and/or back-up power.

  • Publication number: 20140065274
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for producing and maintaining a very low level of oxygen in a sealed container for maintaining a foodstuff. In one aspect, the method comprises (1) a first oxygen reduction step wherein the oxygen content in said container is reduced to no more than 20,000 ppm; (2) maintaining the foodstuff in the container such that the oxygen content in the foodstuff and the gaseous environment approaches equilibrium; and (3) a second oxygen reduction step wherein the oxygen content in said container is reduced to no more than 2000 ppm. Systems useful in the methods disclosed herein.
