Patent number: 5780763Abstract: A method for severing or weakening materials. Explosive cords are placed in grooves on the upper surface of the material to be severed or weakened. The explosive cords are initiated simultaneously to introduce explosive shock waves into the material. These shock waves progress toward the centerline between the explosive cords and the lower surface of the material. Intersecting and reflected waves produce a rarefaction zone on the centerline to fail the material in tension. A groove may also be cut in the lower surface of the material to aid in severing or weakening the material.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1995Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Morry L. Schimmel, deceased, Laurence J. Bement, Glenn F. DuBrucq, Jr., Edward A. Klein

Patent number: 5676303Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method for wire splicing using an explosive joining process. The apparatus consists of a prebend, U-shaped strap of metal that slides over prepositioned wires. A standoff means separates the wires from the strap before joining. An adhesive means holds two ribbon explosives in position centered over the U-shaped strap. A detonating means connects to the ribbon explosives. The process involves spreading strands of each wire to be joined into a flat plane. The process then requires alternating each strand in alignment to form a mesh-like arrangement with an overlapped area. The strap slides over the strands of the wires, and the standoff means is positioned between the two surfaces. The detonating means then initiates the ribbon explosives that drive the strap to accomplish a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and collision bonding resulting in electron-sharing linkups.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1996Date of Patent: October 14, 1997Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Bement, Ronnie B. Perry

Patent number: 5179249Abstract: Common blasting caps are made from an aluminum shell in the form of a tube which is closed at both ends. One end, which is called the output end, terminates in a principal side or face, and contains a detonating agent which communicates with a means for igniting the detonating agent. The improvement of the present invention is a flat, steel foil bonded to the face in a position which is aligned perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis of the tube.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1991Date of Patent: January 12, 1993Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Patent number: 5052817Abstract: An apparatus for testing ignitability of an initiator includes a body having a central cavity, initiator holder for holding the initiator over the central cavity of the body, an ignition material holder disposed in the central cavity of the body and having a cavity facing the initiator holder which receives a measured quantity of ignition material to be ignited by the initiator and a chamber in communication with the cavity of the ignition material and the central cavity of the body, and a measuring system for analyzing pressure characteristics generated by ignition of the ignition material by the initiator. The measuring system includes at least one transducer coupled to an oscillograph for recording pressure traces generated by ignition.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Patent number: 5050789Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and a process for the explosive joining of a flyer plate and a base plate. The apparatus consists of a flyer plate positioned over a base plate. The flyer plate has a notch containing a filler material in intimate contact with the flyer plate. An adhesive means holds a ribbon explosive partially overlapping the notch in the flyer plate. A detonating means initiates the ribbon explosive that drives the flyer plate to accomplish a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and effacing bonding, resulting in electron-sharing linkups between the plates. An unbonded tab of the flyer plate is lifted and levered to apply a peeling stress to the limit of the bond. The unbonded tab fractures at a base of the notch leaving a bond to an edge of the attached flyer plate.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1990Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J. Patent number: 4708280Abstract: The invention is a tool and process to be used in explosive joining of tubes. The tool consists of an initiator 81, a tool form 82 and a ribbon explosive 25. The assembled tool 80 is a compact, storable and safe device suitable for explosive joining of small, lightweight tubes down to 0.20 inch in diameter. The invention is inserted into a tube 51 to be welded which tube has itself been inserted into either another tube 52 or a tube plate. A shim or standoff between the two surfaces to be welded is necessary. Initiation of the explosive inside the tube results in a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and collision bonding wherein electron-sharing linkups are formed.Type: GrantFiled: September 8, 1986Date of Patent: November 24, 1987Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator, National Aeronautics & Space AdministrationInventors: Laurence J.
