  • Patent number: 4576975
Abstract: Michler's ketone analogs and salts thereof, which are photosensitizers in water-soluble photoinitiator systems used to induce polymerization in free-radically-curable, ethylenically-unsaturated materials, are disclosed. The Michler's ketone analogs have the formula: ##STR1## wherein each R is an alkyl group of 1 to 8 carbon atoms,R.sup.1 is an alkylene group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms,Z is R.sup.1 COOH or R.sup.1 H, andn is an integer having a value of 1 or 2.The photoinitiator systems are useful in imaging systems, and additionally contain a free radical initiator compound selected from iodonium salts, biimidazoles, trialkylphosphites, alkyl peroxides, benzyl halides, alkyl nitrates, and the benzophenones other than (a).

  • Patent number: 4542234
Abstract: The (S,S) optical isomer of a compound having the general formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sub.1-5 are as defined herein, is recovered essentially free of the (R,S) and (S,R) isomers, by forming a solution of the esters of the (S,S) and the (R,S) and/or (S,R) isomers of said compound, selectively precipitating an acid salt (e.g. maleate) of the (S,S) ester from the solution, and treating the precipitate to form the desired free acid.

  • Patent number: 4451613
Abstract: A photocurable, ethylenically-unsaturated, water-soluble oligomer comprising the reaction product of 100 parts by weight of a dextrin compound, and 35 to 70 parts by weight of at least one ethylenically-unsaturated monomer capable of reacting with at least one hydroxyl group of the dextrin compound, the oligomer having an average in the range of 0.1 to 0.7 ethylenically-unsaturated moiety per anhydroglucose unit and an equivalent weight of 440 to 990, and at least 75 weight percent of the oligomer is water soluble at 20.degree. C. in a concentration of at least 2.5 percent by weight. The oligomer when photocured in combination with an ethylenically-unsaturated monomer is useful as a photoresist in positive-acting, water-developable, lithographic printing plates.
