  • Patent number: 5494266
Abstract: A vessel, for example a metallurgical tundish for multi-strand casting, has at least one discharge assembly/block. Such assembly includes a refractory perforated brick fitted in the vessel, the perforated brick having therethrough an opening that is at least partially defined by a surface that is rotationally symmetrical about a longitudinal center axis of the opening. A refractory nozzle brick has a peripheral surface that is rotationally symmetrical about a longitudinal center axis of the nozzle brick. The nozzle brick has therethrough a discharge opening that is located eccentrically of the longitudinal center axis of the nozzle brick. The nozzle brick fits into the opening in the perforated brick with the longitudinal center axes thereof coincident, such that the nozzle brick is rotatable relative to the perforated brick about a rotation axis that is defined by the coincident longitudinal center axes.

  • Patent number: 4781238
Abstract: A refractory channel connection apparatus transfers molten metal from a metallurgical vessel into a mold of a continuous casting machine formed by a peripheral groove and a casting wheel and a band covering the open side of the groove. The channel connection apparatus includes a refractory pouring tube having an inlet end connected to the discharge nozzle of the metallurgical vessel, an outlet end and a molten metal passage extending from the inlet end to the outlet end. A refractory nozzle extension is provided at the outlet end of the pouring tube, the nozzle extension having therethrough a flow through passage communicating with the passage of the pouring tube, an outer profile dimensioned to extend tangentially into the mold and to define therewith a gas seal slot, and a lower end extending into the mold to a level above the upper level of metal cast therein.

  • Patent number: 4627481
Abstract: A refractory conduit assembly for the transfer of molten steel from a discharge vessel to an ingot mold of a horizontal continuous casting plant includes a replaceable spout member adapted to be removably connected at a predetermined location to the refractory lining of a vessel. The spout member has therethrough a discharge channel to receive from the interior of the vessel a flow of molten steel. A shut off device is provided to interrupt the flow to the discharge channel. A casting tube has therethrough a flow passage with inlet and outlet ends. A coupling device connects the inlet end of the flow passage to the discharge channel, such that the flow of molten metal passes through the casting tube. The outlet end of the flow passage has an altered cross-sectional configuration adapted to that of the ingot mold. A nozzle has an inlet end connected to the casting tube and an outlet end having thereat a portion to sealingly contact walls of the ingot mold.

  • Patent number: 4593838
Abstract: An apparatus for replaceably connecting a casting tube to a closable pouring spout of a tundish includes a gimbal device for supporting the casting tube and a double-arm lever including a first arm supporting the gimbal device and a second arm carrying a counterweight. The lever is supported about an axis such that the counterweight pivots the lever about the axis and causes the first arm and the gimbal device to press the casting tube against the mouth of the pouring spout. Supports are fixed to the tundish, a pin member defines the axis, and a mounting structure moves the pin member between an operative position pivotally supporting the lever on the supports and an inoperative position where the lever is released from the supports.
