  • Patent number: 6905479
Abstract: The present invention involves, in some embodiments, reusable pump drive systems, which are coupled to removable, and preferably disposable, pumping cartridges. The invention provides, in some embodiments, novel pumping cartridges for use in pumping systems. One such cartridge includes an integrated filter element therein for filtering fluids, for example fluids pumped to the body of a patient in a medical procedure. In some embodiments, the integrated filter is utilized as a blood clot removal filter and in other embodiments is used to remove particulates liquids infused to a patient. The filter element includes a filter with pores therein that are preferably sized to permit essentially unrestricted flow of individual human blood cells therethrough and to block or collect blood clots, cell clumps, particulates etc. with sizes substantially larger than the average size of a human blood cell.

  • Patent number: 6877713
Abstract: The present invention involves, in some embodiments, mechanisms and methods of occluding collapsible tubing with an occluder to prevent fluid flow therethrough. In some embodiments, a tube occluding mechanism is disclosed that includes a bendable occluding member for creating a force that can be applied to a collapsible tube to occlude the tube. In some embodiments, the collapsible tube can be an inlet/outlet tube on a removable pumping cartridge that is coupled to a reusable pump drive component when the system is in operation. In such embodiments, the occluding mechanism can be attached to the reusable component and can be used to block fluid flow to and from the pumping cartridge. In some embodiments, the occluding member can comprises a spring plate which can create a force to occlude tubing when in a relaxed, unbent configuration, and which can be bent to unocclude the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6749403
Abstract: Methods and systems are disclosed for pumping fluids at desired average flow rates by applying a predetermined force to a pump chamber and pulsing an outlet valve of the pump chamber to deliver a fluid therefrom. In some embodiments, pump chambers are provided within removable pumping cartridges that are constructed and configured to be coupled to a reusable pump drive component. In other embodiments, the pumping cartridges include multiple pump chambers, which pump chambers are operated so that a pump flow rate of one pump chamber is a predetermined fraction of the pump flow rate of another pump chamber within the pumping cartridge.

  • Patent number: 6663359
Abstract: Pump chambers are disclosed that include at least one spacer element therein to prevent any gas in the pump chamber from being pumped from the pump chamber during pumping. In some embodiments, the pump chambers are included in removable pumping cartridges that are constructed and configured for coupling with reusable pump drives. Some embodiments of pump chambers including spacer elements therein comprise a substantially rigid component forming a wall of the pump chamber with a flexible or movable membrane disposed on the wall to form the chamber. Spacer elements in such pump chambers are, in some embodiments, attached to a wall of the substantially rigid component so as to prevent the movable/flexible membrane from contacting the wall during pumping.

  • Patent number: 6416293
Abstract: Pumping cartridges are disclosed for use in pumping systems. One such cartridge includes a series of fluid flow paths therein and a bypass valve therein, the bypass valve can selectively block fluid flow along one or both of two fluid flow paths through the valve. In some embodiments, the pumping cartridges are removable from a reusable pump drive component. In some embodiments the pumping cartridges comprise a substantially rigid component having one or more channels and/or depressions therein covered by a membrane so that together the rigid component and the membrane define a series of fluid flow paths, pump chambers and fluidic valves, including a bypass valve.

  • Patent number: 6302653
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for detecting the presence of a gas in a pump chamber of a pumping system. The methods, and systems employing the methods, involve isolating a pump chamber from its surroundings, for example by closing an inlet and outlet valve on lines to and from the chamber, and determining the volume of the pump chamber with a force applied to a moveable or flexible surface of the pump chamber. The volume of the pump chamber is then redetermined in a similar fashion but with a second, different level of force applied to the surface of the pump chamber. The volumes thus determined can then be compared to detect the presence of a gas in the pump chamber.
