  • Patent number: 4574442
Abstract: A boring, skiving, and roller burnishing tool includes means for boring, skiving, and burnishing a cylindrical hole in a workpiece. The boring means comprises a plurality of cutting blades oriented at a particular angle to remove a relatively large amount of material from the hole. The roller burnishing means includes a roller race having a central axis and a frustoconical outer surface tapering radially outward and axially forward. Rollers are arranged about the outer surface of the race for rolling engagement with the internal surface of the hole. The smaller ends of the rollers face forward, and the taper of the rollers is such that the outermost surface portion of each roller is parallel to the central axis of the race. The rollers are biased in the forward direction using a roller pusher with a chosen force so that the force exerted on the internal surface of the hole remains constant over a range of sizes of the hole.

  • Patent number: 4566826
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a cutting insert is disclosed. A rotatable head includes at least one peripheral slot which has a generally flat bottom and a pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides of the slot are tilted relative to the bottom so that the bottom of the slot forms an acute corner with one side and an obtuse corner with the other side. An insert seat is provided which has a bottom and a back side which meet at an acute angle conformed to the acute corner of the slot. The seat has a front side with a recess to support the cutting insert in a general radial posture relative to the rotatable head. The seat is secured to the slot with the back side of the seat flush with the side of the slot forming the acute corner. The location of the bottom of the seat relative to the bottom of the slot is adjustable. A wedge is forced between the insert and the side of the slot forming the obtuse corner to confine the insert between the wedge and the seat.

  • Patent number: 4527929
Abstract: A skiving and roller burnishing tool for finishing the internal surface of a cylindrical bore includes a cutting assembly and a pair of roller burnishing assemblies. Each roller assembly includes a plurality of frustoconical rollers mounted on a frustoconical bearing surface. By translating the individual rollers axially, the effective diameter of the outer surfaces of the roller can be changed. By applying a constant force on the rollers, the two roller assemblies hold the tool firmly in place inside the work piece, preventing accidental misalignment of the cutting tool. It has been found that this workpiece is particularly well suited for finishing relatively long bores.

  • Patent number: 4509885
Abstract: A skiving and roller burnishing tool includes a plurality of frustoconically tapered rollers and a retractable knife for use in combination for finishing the internal surface of a cylindrical hole. The roller burnishing tool includes a roller race having a central axis and a frustoconical outer surface tapering radially outward and axially forward. The rollers are arranged about the outer surface of the race for rolling engagement with the internal surface of the hole. The retractable knife includes a pair of radially extendible knife holders defining a camming path having an axial portion and an angled portion.

  • Patent number: 4425693
Abstract: A skiving tool having a retractable knife for use in combination with a roller burnishing tool for finishing the internal surface of a cylindrical hole. The retractable knife includes a pair of radially extendible knife holders defining a camming path having an axial portion and an angled portion. A push dart has a camming element with complementary camming surfaces which rides along the camming path. Axial actuation of the push dart causes the knife holders to extend radially into a stable, locked position. The roller burnishing tool includes a roller race having a central axis and a frustoconical outer surface tapering radially outward and axially forward. A plurality of frustoconically tapered rollers are arranged about the outer surface for rolling engagement with the outer surface with the smaller ends of the rollers facing forward. The taper of the rollers is such that the outermost surface portion of each roller is parallel to the central axis.

  • Patent number: 4367576
Abstract: A skiving and roller burnishing tool for cutting and burnishing the interior of a cylinder or other workpiece is disclosed. The cutter assembly is mounted on a drive shaft which drives the cutter assembly through the interior of the cylinder to cut the interior of the cylinder to its approximate final diameter. A roller race is located aft of the cutter assembly, and has a frustoconical configuration in section which tapers outwardly in a forward direction. A plurality of rollers are distributed circumferentially about and bear on the roller race. The rollers are also frustoconical in section so that the outermost surface of each roller is parallel to the axis of the drive shaft. A roller cage engages the rollers and restricts movement of the rollers while allowing them to rotate about their axes and translate radially to a limited degree. The roller cage is movable in an axial direction relative to the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4339857
Abstract: A system for finishing the cylindrical interior of a workpiece on a single machine is disclosed. The workpiece is mounted to allow access to its cylindrical interior from each end. A skiving tool is advanced into and through the cylindrical interior of the workpiece from one end to machine the cylindrical interior. As the skiving tool is operating, cutting oil is introduced into the cylindrical interior of the workpiece to entrain the chips generated by the skiving tool and flush the chips out through the second end of the workpiece. The cutting oil and entrained chips are deflected at the second end of the workpiece into a collector during operation of the skiving tool. The deflector is moveable to expose the second end of the workpiece when operation of the skiving tool is completed. A honing tool is advanced into and through the cylindrical interior of the workpiece from the second end thereof after the deflector has been moved and skiving completed.
