  • Patent number: 9280281
Abstract: A mechanism for allowing a user to prove their identity on touch-based devices employing the use of a touch surface in firmware-controlled environments is discussed. The user may prove his or her identity by entering a series of strokes on the touch-based device to form a word or image. Characteristics of the entered strokes such as stroke order and stroke direction are compared to stored stroke characteristics that were gathered from a drawing of the same word or image during a user enrollment process. If the stroke characteristics comparison is acceptable, the user identity is verified.

  • Patent number: 8429390
Abstract: A method for performing a quick boot and a general boot at a basic input output system (BIOS) stage is described. A computer is powered on. An embedded controller firmware or a BIOS determines whether a quick boot key is pressed. If the quick boot key is not pressed, a boot flag is changed from Quick Boot to General Boot. If the quick boot key is pressed, the BIOS determines whether the boot flag is set to Quick Boot. If it is determined that the boot flag is set to Quick Boot, an initialization of drivers preset by the quick boot is performed, and uninitialized drivers are initialized at a stage when an operating system is started. If it is determined that the boot flag is set to General Boot, an initialization of all drivers is performed.

  • Publication number: 20090105608
Abstract: A spoon-shaped skin biopsy instrument is used in the removal of superficial skin samples and skin abnormalities for subsequent laboratory analysis. The spoon-shaped skin biopsy instrument is comprised of a pair of spoon-shaped cutting edges, which surround the desired skin sample, a crossed-members apparatus with finger loops, and a pivot point that connects the crossed members. This present invention maximizes surgical efficiency and handling and minimizes operation time.

  • Publication number: 20070088923
Abstract: A system, program storage device, and method of optimizing data placement on a storage device, the method comprising establishing a specified time constraint for which the storage device is to delete data stored thereon; dividing a data object into a plurality of data bits; programming a block of data and the data bits with a logic operand if the storage device is incapable of deleting the data within the specified time constraint; creating an encoded block of data from the programmed block of data and the data bits; organizing the encoded block of data and the data bits in the storage device according to data deletion requirements; and removing the data bits from the storage device if the data bits are organized within a specified data deletion requirement, wherein the data bits are removed using a data shredding process, and wherein the logic operand comprises an exclusive-or (XOR) operator.

  • Publication number: 20050091469
Abstract: An LUN/LBA interface is utilized to obtain the benefits of a content addressed storage (CAS) interface. Reference data is manipulated in a manner similar to a CAS system, where an object ID (OID) table is used to maintain OIDs generated for hashed LBAs. A first tier logic block is used to provide a LUN/LBA storage interface to application programs and to facilitate the writing of reference data. A second tier logic block hashes the content of reference data to be written and stores the OID generated to the first OID table. A third tier logic block facilitates writing the reference data to an LUN and to verify the accuracy of reference data to be read from the LUN. Reference data may be written to a storage area in accordance with a write-once, write-many, or write-many with versioning policy.

  • Publication number: 20050050279
Abstract: A storage system and method for prestaging data in a cache based on relative changes in the frequency of data access and relative changes in the effectiveness of previous prestage operations. The relative changes in the frequency of data access are determined by storing statistics of data access to all regions in the system and comparing recent access statistics to the stored data. Access statistics include data location, I/O size and access frequency. The relative changes in the effectiveness of previous prestage operations are detected by recording the number of previous prestaging operations for a region, recording the number of I/O requests for data that has been prestaged, and dividing the number of I/O requests for previously prestaged data in a region during a time period by the number of previous prestage operations for the region during the same time.
