  • Patent number: 4540498
Abstract: Water soluble block copolymers having two or more water soluble polymer blocks useful for controlling the viscosity of aqueous media used in enhanced oil recovery techniques are described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 31, 1983
Date of Patent: September 10, 1985
    Assignee: The Standard Oil Company
Inventors: Muyen M. Wu, Lawrence E. Ball
  • Patent number: 4525578
Abstract: Polyesteramides can be prepared by copolymerizing a cyclic lactone with at least one of an ammonium salt of an alpha, beta unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, an alpha, beta unsaturated nitrile and water and beta-aminopropionic acids and their alkyl derivatives. Polymers with especially good physical properties were prepared by polymerizing caprolactone with one or more ammonium methacrylate, ammonium acrylate, acrylonitrile and beta-alanine. These polymers are useful as molding plastics.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 19, 1983
Date of Patent: June 25, 1985
    Assignee: The Standard Oil Company
    Inventors: Mu-Yen M. Wu, Lawrence E. Ball
  • Patent number: 4461885
Abstract: Polyamides can be formed in good yields by the copolymerization of at least one alpha, beta-unsaturated nitrile with at least one amino acid. These polymers are suitable for use as fibers, plastics, films and molding resins.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 8, 1980
Date of Patent: July 24, 1984
    Assignee: The Standard Oil Company
    Inventors: Mu-Yen M. Wu, Lawrence E. Ball
  • Patent number: 4411745
Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized by an indirect process which electrolytically initiates the polymerization. The indirect electrolytic polymerization process utilizes a free radical initiator and an electron transfer agent in a two-phase system capable of carrying an electric current.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 4, 1982
Date of Patent: October 25, 1983
    Assignee: The Standard Oil Company
Inventors: Lawrence E. Ball, Martin A. Pichler, V. Frances Gaylor
  • Patent number: 4412061
Abstract: This invention relates to a new process for preparing a copolyamide comprising polymerizing an alpha, beta-unsaturated nitrile and water with a molar excess of a lactam. In one embodiment, acrylonitrile, water and caprolactam are polymerized to form a nylon-3,6.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 24, 1980
Date of Patent: October 25, 1983
    Assignee: The Standard Oil Company
    Inventors: Mu-Yen M. Wu, Lawrence E. Ball
