  • Patent number: 6779657
Abstract: A single-use applicator assembly for dispensing and applying a polymerizable monomeric adhesive material includes: a base portion having at least one sealed compartment; a polymerizable monomeric adhesive material contained in the compartment; an applicator at least partially disposed in the compartment such that a tip of the applicator is proximate the adhesive material. The at least one sealed compartment may comprise first and second sealed compartments that are separated with the polymerizable monomeric adhesive material contained in the first compartment and the applicator at least partially disposed in the second compartment. Alternatively, the first and second compartments may be open to each other. In such case, the applicator assembly may further comprise a plunger that defines the second compartment and that is movable into the first compartment to displace the adhesive material into the second compartment. A kit can include multiple applicator assemblies that are separate or frangibly connected.

  • Patent number: 6607631
Abstract: A polymerizable monomer adhesive composition includes a 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomer and at least one slip additive, where the slip additive causes a polymer film formed from the monomer to have a lower coefficient of friction than in an absence of the slip additive. The slip additive can be selected from, inter alia, fluorinated monomers or polymers, fluorinated additives, siloxane-containing monomers or polymers, siloxane-containing additives, fluorinated siloxanes, and long chain fatty acid esters. The slip additive can also form a second phase in a resultant polymer film, where the second phase is soluble in the monomer but is insoluble or substantially insoluble in the polymer.

  • Patent number: 6595940
Abstract: A disposable applicator includes a generally tubular applicator body having a closed proximal end and an open distal end and a frangible vial inside. The proximal end is covered by a drying swab while the distal end is covered by an applicator swab that is in open communication with the interior of the applicator body. Within the applicator body is a frangible vial containing a biomedically useful liquid composition, such as an &agr;-cyanoacrylate adhesive, a medicament, or both. The applicator is useful for applying liquid compositions to target sites such as tissue, particularly sites of topical pathology, such as stomatitis lesions.

  • Patent number: 6579469
Abstract: An adhesive composition that contains a preservative is particularly useful as a medical adhesive and can include alkyl cyanoacrylate monomers. The preservative is preferably soluble in the monomer. The composition may optionally be sterilized by placing a mixture of a polymerizable adhesive monomer and a preservative in a container, sealing the container, and sterilizing the mixture and the container.

  • Publication number: 20030031499
Abstract: An applicator for dispensing adhesive material includes a quenched foam material, provided so that the adhesive material comes in contact with the quenched foam material. Thus, polymerization of the adhesive material is initiated in the absence of additional polymerization initiators. In addition, the applicator is configured to permit improved control and economy in application of the adhesive.

  • Patent number: 6494896
Abstract: A hand-held applicator delivers liquid or semi-liquid compositions, such as adhesives, to an internal tissue or organ in an even and controlled manner. The applicator includes a pump, a tubular extension that is thin enough to pass through an endoscopic pathway or trocar, a proximal end of the tubular extension being sealingly connected to the pump, and an applicator tip that attaches to the distal end of the tubular extension. The tip includes the liquid and the pump pumps the liquid to the internal tissue in an even and controlled manner without contact of the liquid by the pump. The pump is preferably a micropipetter that includes a hand-held portion having a hand-actuatable plunger that does not come in direct, physical contact with the liquid to be dispensed. The composition may be an adhesive such as an alpha-cyanoacrylate. The device may further include a wound closure device including at least two closure pins extending from the distal end of the tubular extension.
