  • Patent number: 6347585
Abstract: A gap adjusting device for a rotary press comprises a frame and a fountain roller and a metering roller which are both rotatably mounted relative to the frame. A gap is defined between the metering roller and the fountain roller, and an adjustment member is provided which has an actuator for alternatively moving the rollers toward and away from each other, thereby decreasing or increasing, respectively, the size of the gap. Additionally, the gap adjusting device includes a stabilizing member for stabilizing the metering roller.

  • Patent number: 5207158
Abstract: A roller 14 for use with a surface-scraping doctor blade to meter a fluid applied to an outer surface of the roller 14. The roller 14 has the following elements: a substantially cylindrical core 101 having a core surface; a coating 105 of a polymer material 102 on the core surface, the coating 105 having a predetermined thickness and having a predetermined percent by volume of substantially hard wear-resistant particles 103, the coating 105 also having a surface which is the outer surface of the roller 14; a plurality of cells 104 in the coating 105, each of the cells 104 having at least one cell wall oriented substantially perpendicular to the outer surface of the roller 14 and having an open end at the outer surface of the roller 14. A method for the manufacture of the roller 14 and a method for using the roller 14 are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5038680
Abstract: A pair of coacting blanket cylinder assemblies (13', 14') employed in a high speed printing press are each provided with a resilient blanket (13, 14) wrapped around a cylinder (15, 16) and held in place by magnets (35, 26) carried by the cylinders (15, 16). The magnets (35, 36) attract and hold magnetic portions (31, 32, 33, 34) of a metal backing plate adjacent the ends of the blankets (13A, 13B, 14A, 14B) which are separated by a gap (43, 44) of a size selected according to the thickness of blanket and natural frequency of the cylinder (15, 16) to obtain a residual response for gap disturbances that is less than a maximum threshold response at which streaking occurs during printing operation at high speed.

  • Patent number: 4462735
Abstract: A live storage buffer for receiving newspapers from a printing press which includes an endless conveyor having carriers adapted to travel about the pathway of the conveyor and to removably support newspaper container members thereon. A pair of spaced transfer conveyors operatively associated with the endless conveyor are adapted to sequentially receive and then return the containers to the endless conveyor. On one transfer conveyor the containers are positioned by an indexing member at a location for receiving a supply of newspapers, and on the other transfer conveyor the containers are indexed to a position where the newspapers are unloaded for further processing downstream of the storage buffer.

  • Patent number: 4125073
Abstract: A printing press provides a pair of cylinders mounted for rotation about parallel axes. At least one of the cylinders carries a member wrapped thereon having circumferentially spaced edges defining a gutter. When the cylinders are rotated, an impact is generated when the gutter juxtaposes the adjacent cylinder thereby generating oscillatory movement in at least one of the cylinders. An impact damper mechanism is provided for minimizing the amplitude of all oscillations occurring after the gutter moves out of the nip and for rapidly degrading the following oscillations.
