    Abstract: An apparatus for spraying powder coating material includes a rotatable turret which moves articles to and from a work station. A powder spray gun is operable to spray a pattern onto each of the articles in turn while the article is at the work station. The powder flows through the spray gun as a series of pulses. A diverter assembly is operable to divert a portion of each pulse of powder away from the nozzle to more sharply define the pulse. An excess powder collector draws a flow of powder away from the work station. A virgin powder container supplies powder to a powder collector container which supplies powder to a powder feed container which supplies powder to the spray gun. Sensors associated with the virgin, collector and feed containers ensure that a predetermined quantity of powder is maintained in each container. During transport of powder from the virgin and collector containers, the containers and their associated pumps are vibrated to facilitate the flow of powder.

    Abstract: A system for spray coating a substrate such as a flexible web of plastic film with a gas barrier coating containing a polymer dispersion. The system includes a spray coating booth or chamber including spray nozzles dispensing a spray of coating material onto the surface of a web of material continuously moving into and out of the coating chamber. A series of feed rollers move the web into the coating booth into proximity to the spray nozzles such that on actuation of the nozzles a stream of coating material coats both sides of the surface of the web with a wet coating layer. The coating booth includes a system for containing and removing the airborne liquid overspray carried from the booth with the web without disturbing the wet coating on the web and without substantially drawing of overspray from the coating chamber.

    Abstract: An automatic safety system is built into a pneumatic motor actuated dispensing gun to prevent the gun from dispensing liquid material whenever the nozzle of the gun is loosened or removed from the gun body. The safety system comprises an air flow passage contained internally of the gun body for connecting the pneumatic motor to a normally sealed surface located between the nozzle and the gun body. Removal or loosening of the nozzle relative to the body, breaks this sealed surface and results in leakage of sufficient air pressure to atmosphere as to prevent actuation of the pneumatic motor and thus opening of the normally closed flow control valve of the gun.

    Abstract: A continuous coater of the type having a conveyor extending through a coating booth where paint or other material is sprayed onto the products as they are conveyed through the booth. The booth has an air flow control vestibule located adjacent the entrance and exit ports. Each vestibule is connected to an air flow exhaust system and is so configured that it is operative to draw air almost exclusively from outside the booth into the exhaust system so that there is a minimum of input air to the exhaust system from within the booth. The incoming air from outside the booth effectively forms a flow barrier to the egress of sprayed material and/or solvent to the atmosphere through the vestibule entrance and exit ports. Preferably, there is located in each vestibule means for creating an air curtain which functions to minimize the egress of paint or solvent from the coater cabinet and to provide a more nearly saturated atmosphere inside the cabinet.
