    Abstract: Flameproofing of various combustible materials, particularly wood-shake shingles used in roofing of houses and tar paper sheets, by coating and impregnating such combustible materials with a liquid composition comprising a fire or flame retardant, exemplified by phosphorus- and halogen-containing organic compounds, a liquid curable organo binder, a curing agent or, more particularly, a photoiniator. After the coating and/or impregnation, curing is effected by either sunlight or ultraviolet light or ionizing radiation.

    Abstract: Preparation of prostaglandins and certain intermediates therefor wherein a 1,5-diene compound such as ##STR1## IS SUBJECTED TO A PHOTOCHEMICAL CHEMICAL REACTION IN THE PRESENCE OF A PHOTOSENSITIZER WHEREBY TO EFFECT RING CLOSURE WITH THE CONVERSION TO A BICYCLO [2.1.1] SYSTEM FOLLOWED BY CONVERSION TO INTERMEDIATES SUCH AS ##STR2## The resulting intermediate is subsequently fragmented to produce a further intermediate having stereochemistries such as are present in prostaglandins which, in turn, is converted by known techniques into prostaglandins.

    Abstract: Preparation of prostaglandin intermediates by reacting mon-tetrahydropyranyl ether, in a diethyl ether medium containing pyridine, with malonyl dichloride, reacting the resulting malonic acid chloride with triethylamine in a diethyl ether medium to produce a ketone derivative, followed by heating to effect ring closure, then reduction, then cleaving the cyclobutyl ring followed by epimerization to produce the "Corey" intermediate. Those intermediates which are novel are also claimed.

  • Preparation of prostaglandin intermediates

    Abstract: Preparation of prostaglandin intermediates by reacting mono-tetrahydropyranyl ether with 3-acetoxy acryloyl chloride in the presence of pyridine to produce the 3-acetoxy acryloyl ester of said ether. The said ester is then irradiated to effect photocyclization whereby to close the ring in said ester. The resulting compound is then treated with methanol containing a small amount of potassium carbonate whereby to produce the "Corey" intermediate. Those intermediates which are novel are also claimed.
