  • Patent number: 8543617
Abstract: An improved method and system for specifying physical locations when using applications run on navigation systems or other computer platforms that provide navigation- or map-related functions. When requesting a navigation- or map-related function from such an application, a user specifies a physical location using a keyword instead of specifying the physical location conventionally, such as by street address. A keyword database relates keywords to physical locations. The application uses the keyword database, or a copy thereof, to find data indicating the physical location associated with the keyword specified by the user. Preferably, physical locations are defined in the keyword database in terms of data in a corresponding geographic database. The application then performs the requested navigation- or map-related function using the data indicating the physical location associated with the keyword. The keyword database is built using input from users.

  • Patent number: 8467810
Abstract: A geographic database is updated using image data collected in the background of a viewing application, such as an augmented reality application, running on a mobile device. The mobile device determines a current geographic location, which is used to access an outline template generated from the geographic data. The geographic data may include sensor data or images. The outline template is compared to the image data, and an error report is provided from the differences, if any. The differences are associated with physical objects that have changed at the current geographic location from a time when the geographic database was built or last updated to the present time. A typical physical object is a building that was recently built or removed. The error report may be used to directly update the geographic database or trigger further data collection at the geographic location.

  • Patent number: 8078572
Abstract: A reporting program and system for updating a master copy of a geographic database is disclosed. According to the method and system, reports are obtained that relate to data contained in a geographic database. Satellite images of the geographic locations represented by the data in the reports are obtained. The satellite images are analyzed to confirm a need to make changes to the master copy of the geographic database based on the reports. After confirming the need to make the changes, the master copy of the geographic database is updated.

  • Patent number: 8010284
Abstract: Wireless coverage data are associated with a geographic database that contains data that represent a road network in a geographic region. The wireless coverage data indicate areas within the geographic region in which navigation-related services or data from a navigation services provider are available wirelessly, or conversely, areas within the geographic region in which navigation-related services or data from a navigation services provider are not available wirelessly. An end user obtains the wireless coverage data. The wireless coverage data are used to indicate to the end user areas in which navigation-related services or data from the navigation services provider are available wirelessly or areas in which navigation-related services or data from the navigation services provider are not available wirelessly.

  • Patent number: 7949464
Abstract: A method of operating a navigation system includes obtaining a destination location and identifying a parking facility proximate said destination location. The method further includes transmitting a parking message including a determined parking availability. The determined parking availability is based on historic parking availability information and real time parking availability data. The parking message may include an identification code of said parking facility.

  • Patent number: 7805239
Abstract: A method of operating a navigation system includes obtaining a destination location and identifying a parking facility proximate said destination location. The method further includes providing historic parking availability information for the identified parking facility. The historic parking availability information is based on past parking availability at the identified parking facility. The method may also calculate a route from an origin to the parking facility and provide guidance for following the route. Additionally, the method obtains a reservation for parking at the parking facility.

  • Patent number: 7538690
Abstract: A method of obtaining data for a geographic database for use with a navigation system includes collecting data indicating parking availability at a parking facility at a plurality of times and analyzing the data indicating parking availability. Based on the analyzing, the method derives historic parking data for the parking facility. The historic parking data indicates past parking availability at the parking facility at predetermined times. The historic parking data is stored in the geographic database. The historic parking data may indicate past parking availability for predetermined time intervals, days of the week, weather conditions and events.
