    Abstract: A field-installable and removable moisture and/or acid test kit and method is used for a vapor compression system. A moisture and/or acid indicator is provided in the test kit which is installed at a single point location upstream or downstream of the system compressor in a region where the system working fluid is in a substantially vapor phase. The test kit can be connected to the system by a threaded connection or a quick disconnect fitting. The moisture/acid indicator in the test kit detects the presence of moisture and/or acid by a diffusion of moisture or acid to the indicator via diffusion. Some magnification is provided in the test kit because the lower transport rates from the vapor diffusion mechanism requires a smaller mass of indicator material than has been used in conventional flowing liquid systems.

An evaporative heat exchanger is provided in the loop as well as a liquid reservoir which is sized to limit short cycling of a compressor in a refrigeration loop associated therewith via the evaporative heat exchanger. A hot gas bypass can be associated with the compressor to allow recirculation of the superheated refrigerant gas when cooling is not required.

    Abstract: A heat pump system and method utilizes heat of mixing, in addition to the latent heat of solution, to increase cooling ability and thermal performance. The system includes a unique two-phase compressor for compressing a two-component mixture of liquid absorbent-refrigerant solution and superheated vapor to a high pressure. A generator extracts heat from the volume to be cooled by desorption and evaporation of the refrigerant from the high concentration solution in fluid connection with the inlet of the compressor. An absorber releases heat to surroundings by absorbing and condensing refrigerant vapor back into the liquid solution. A throttle valve controls the flow and reduces the pressure of the working fluid is in fluid connection with the absorber and the generator.
