  • Patent number: 4686416
Abstract: A front assembly for a color cathode tube is disclosed. The tube faceplate has on its inner surface a centrally disposed screen area for receiving process materials during the spin-application process. The front assembly has a shadow mask support structure secured to the inner surface of the faceplate on opposed sides of the screen area. The structure has a first surface for receiving and securing a foil shadow mask, and a second surface inclined from the first surface to the screen area effective to conduct from the screen area any excess of coating material applied during the spin-application process. As a result, discontinuities in phosphor application visible to the viewer, and non-adherence of phosphor resulting in wash-off and flake-off, are avoided. An embodiment is also shown in which electrical connection is made between a mask support structure and a screen.

  • Patent number: 4356606
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for use in the manufacture of a color cathode ray picture tube. The tube has a glass face panel with a rearwardly extending flange with a plurality of studs extending radially inwardly from the flange. The tube includes a shadow mask suspended in precise proximity to the panel by an equal plurality of leaf springs. The rearwardly extending springs are attached to the mask in an orientation substantially parallel with the axis of said tube. The springs have an aperture at the distal end for engagement with an associated one of the studs. Engagement means for each of the springs for engaging the apertures with the studs during insertion of the mask into the panel comprise the following: Spring depressor means provide for bending the spring adjacent to the mask, and the spring depressor means include channel means parallel with the spring for accepting the distal end of the spring.

  • Patent number: 4355260
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for assembling a frameless, relatively thin and torsionally flexible shadow mask and four relatively thick and inflexible mask-suspension brackets. The apparatus, which is for use in the manufacture of color television cathode ray picture tubes, provides for conforming of the brackets to the contour of the skirt of the mask, and the welding of the brackets thereto. The brackets according to the invention have a planar central section and two arms for the embracing of and attachment to the skirt around the corners of the mask. Each bracket has at least one region in each arm adjacent to the central section that is perforated to decrease the cross-sectional area of the region and thus increase electrical resistance of the region.

  • Patent number: 4317064
Abstract: A color cathode ray tube is depicted which has a faceplate and a shadow mask mounted in precise relationship to the faceplate by a plurality of suspension devices spaced on the periphery of the faceplate. The suspension devices provide for rigidly and stably suspending the mask. Each suspension device comprises a stud extending from the faceplate and a leaf spring formed to support and space the mask in proper relationship to the faceplate with the spring having a first end formed for detachable engagement to the stud. A bracket or frame attached to the mask has a seat for receiving in permanent attachment the second end of the spring. The suspension device is characterized by the spring and bracket or frame having configurations at their interface which are such that the lateral edges of the spring are compressively preloaded against the bracket or frame to provide a wide stance, which enhances the stability of the suspension of said mask in relation to said faceplate.

  • Patent number: 4300071
Abstract: An improved low-cost mask-faceplate assembly for a shadow-mask-type color cathode ray tube is disclosed. The assembly comprises a glass faceplate having a dished central section and a rearwardly extending flange. A substantially rectangular, frameless shadow mask has a dished perforate central section and rearwardly extending skirt. The mask is relatively stiff about its major and minor axes, but torsionally flexible and unstable with respect to its diagonals. The mask has an integral rim extending radially outward from the edge of the mask skirt to serve as an electron beam shield and to provide added stiffness for the mask. A corner mask suspension system consists of four suspension devices, one at each corner of the mask. Each device comprises a stud affixed to the faceplate flange and arranged to extend radially inwardly along the diagonal of the faceplate. A leaf spring is provided for detachably inter-connecting the mask corner to the stud.

  • Patent number: 4191909
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a CRT (color cathode ray tube) of the shadow mask type, and an improved shadow mask therefor. The CRT has a screen and an electron gun assembly for generating a plurality of electron beams. The improved shadow mask has a dished perforate central portion for selectively transmitting electrons to the screen. The mask has a predetermined surface on a peripheral portion of the mask which is so oriented that when the mask is in place in an operating tube there results an undesirable specular electron reflection of overscanned electrons off the exposed surface and a visible electron flooding of the screen near its perimeter. The shadow mask is characterized by having on the said surface an array of close-spaced grooves oriented to scatter a major fraction of reflected overscanned electrons away from the screen and to thereby markedly suppress the said visible electron flooding of said screen.

  • Patent number: 4168010
Abstract: This application depicts a color cathode ray tube bulb and bulb components having a novel protection system, and a method of installation. In one embodiment disclosed, a color CRT bulb comprises a glass faceplate hermetically sealed to a glass funnel along a sealing interface. The bulb is characterized by having a particle-deposited, high tensile strength, form-fitting bondment composed of a material having a high yield strength and Young's modulus. The bondment engirds and is self-adhered to the bulb at or near the sealing interface so as to become one therewith. The bondment is built up to such cross-sectional dimensions as to have sufficient strength and stiffness to provide implosion protection for the bulb by confining and restraining the shards of a fractured bulb. In a preferred execution the bondment applies a compressive pre-load to the bulb. Also depicted are applications of a bondment to funnel and faceplate components before they are assembled into a complete bulb.

  • Patent number: 4045701
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a color cathode ray of the shadow mask type. A mask suspension system for establishing a predetermined spatial position of said mask relative to the inner surface of said faceplate is disclosed as comprising four suspension means for mechanically coupling the mask to the faceplate, the suspension means being located one at each corner of the mask to permit the mask to flex about said diagonals and conform to the contour of the faceplate. All four of the suspension means have means effecting a predetermined spacing of the mask from the inner surface of the faceplate. Three of the four suspension means also effect an angularly rigid and precise coupling of the mask to the faceplate. The combination is characterized by each of the three suspension means comprising an integral modification of said faceplate inner surface which defines two angularly spaced, axially convergent engagement surface areas.

  • Patent number: 4028580
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a color cathode ray tube including a shadow mask and improved suspension devices for suspending the mask adjacent the faceplate of the tube. The disclosure stresses channel-shaped studs comprising part of the suspension devices. Each of the studs has a first portion adapted to be embedded in the faceplate and a second portion having provision for coupling the stud to the shadow mask. The studs engage reference surfaces on the funnel when the faceplate and funnel are mated and serve to thereby reference the faceplate to the funnel.

  • Patent number: 4019231
Abstract: This disclosure depicts a method, for use in the manufacture of color television picture tubes, for attaching a frameless, curved, non-self-rigid shadow or photographic mask to a flangeless, curved faceplate, the faceplate having a concave inner surface with mask support studs extending therefrom in corner regions thereof. The method comprises providing on each corner of the mask a leaf-type spring having a stud engagement provision for retentively engaging a mating provision on one of the studs. The leaf-type spring also has indexing means separate from the stud engagement provision. The mask is supported in a substantially horizontal position, with the faceplate also being supported in a substantially horizontal position such that the concave surface of the faceplate faces a convex surface of the mask.
