  • Patent number: 4520641
Abstract: A multi-dial combination lock is provided with a security feature whereby the dials are rotated when the lock is opened in order to upset the on-combination setting of the dials. Each dial has a heart-shaped cam and a cam operator is provided including followers for the respective cams. When the lock is set on-combination, and an actuator is moved manually in order to open the lock, the actuator also works the cam operator so as to apply pressure to the cam formations on the respective dials effective to rotate each of the dials into a set orientation. In the set orientation to which the dials are rotated, each dial may be orientated so as to display the same combination indicium, e.g. "0". The lock also includes a shift member for changing the set combination of the dials, the shift member being situated in a pocket formed in the manual actuator.

  • Patent number: 4366686
Abstract: A latching system particularly for a latching console used on a luggage article to releasably secure a body section of the article to a hinged lid, includes a pivotal latch assembly conveniently incorporated in the handle structure of the luggage article. The latch assembly includes a dial and sleeve type combination lock so that the latch assembly can only be operated when the lock is "on combination." The latch assembly is linked to a rod extending lengthwise of the console and having sliding latch members at its opposite ends which cooperate with complementary hasp formations on the respective sections of the luggage article. Pivotal movement of the latch assembly is thereby accompanied by longitudinal movement of the rod to operate the sliding latch members. The hasp formations may be in the form of ribs integrally formed with the respective sections of the luggage article.

  • Patent number: 4366684
Abstract: A latching device for apertured members, such as the sliders of a double-slider zipper employed as a closure on a luggage case, has a latch pivotally mounted on a body member and an upstanding stud which is adapted to be covered by the latch when in latched position. The latching device employs a latching mechanism which is operated by the movement of the pivoted latch without the necessity of manipulating a secondary, manual actuator, thereby permitting the latching device to be operated with one hand. The device includes a pair of plungers slideably disposed within a housing, the plungers having end portions extending beyond the housing which are shaped for cooperation with cams attached to the underside of the latch. The plungers are driven into the housing by the cams when the latch is lowered or raised. When the latch is open, the plungers are held partially driven into the housing, thereby reducing the downward force necessary to close the latch.

  • Patent number: 4356712
Abstract: A hardware assembly for luggage and the like includes a latch pivotally supported on a luggage case and held in a closed position by engagement between catch elements on the latch and cooperating catch elements on a control member supported for movement along the case, the control member being biased in a direction to engage the catch elements. A pivoted manual actuator associated with the latch engages the control member and is capable of moving the control member in a direction to disengage the catch elements to allow the latch to be opened, when the manual actuator is operated. The catch elements serve as a safety catch to prevent the latch from being opened until the catch elements are disengaged. The hardware assembly may further include a latching slide member coupled to the latch by a link member for movement with the latch, and for engaging a cooperable latch element on a second part of the case when the latch is in the closed position.

  • Patent number: 4343163
Abstract: A combination lock of the dial and sleeve type has a scramble feature enabling a hasp to be engaged with a latch of the lock even when the dials and sleeves are not on-combination, by independent movement of the latch relative to manual actuating means of the lock. When the hasp is engaged, it supports the latch in a position in which the latch is adapted to engage a blocking element that prevents the latch from being moved out of its hasp-engaging position independently of the manual actuator. This arrangement effectively prevents the lock from being forced open when the hasp is engaged.

  • Patent number: 4318287
Abstract: A combination lock having a latch mechanism capable of being closed even when the lock is off combination employs an axially movable shaft rotatably supporting combination dials and having a latch element for engaging a cooperable hasp, the latch element being spring biased to a latched position. A slide member, the movement of which is blocked when any dial is off combination, is coupled to the latch element and the shaft and connected to a manual actuator for moving the latch element to an unlatched position. The coupling permits the latch element to move to its unlatched position independently of the slide member so that the hasp may enter the lock and be engaged by the latch element when movement of the slide member is blocked. The operating mechanism of the lock is supported on a frame by a support member connected to one end of the shaft and by a shift lever slidably related to the shaft at its opposite end.

  • Patent number: 4155234
Abstract: A combination lock for luggage, for example, which may be surface mounted. ial gears and cooperable gears have separate axes parallel to the thickness of the lock. In the on-combination position, hubs of the cooperable gears are aligned with openings in a slide that is moved relative to the hubs to permit an actuator to move a latch to its open position. The latch may also be moved to its open position by a hasp, even when the combination is scrambled. A shifter, which has an operator accessible at the face of the lock only when the hasp has been released by the latch, moves the slide and the cooperable gears as a unit, to disengage the cooperable gears from the dial gears for changing the combination.

  • Patent number: 4125282
Abstract: A turnbutton latch has an improved male part comprising a hollow stud supting a turnbutton at one end of the stud. A bolt is fixed to the turnbutton within the stud, and a turnbutton spring biases the turnbutton to a closed position, at which the bolt depresses a trigger against the bias of a trigger spring. When the turnbutton is manually turned to open the latch, the trigger moves toward the turnbutton, blocking the bolt and preventing the turnbutton from closing the latch until the trigger is depressed. A female part placed over the turnbutton and the stud when the latch is open depresses the trigger to close the latch.

  • Patent number: 4123923
Abstract: A combination lock in which an actuator is movable in a predetermined dirion from a rest position to an unlocking position to unlock the lock and is further movable in the predetermined direction beyond the unlocking position to a combination-changing position to permit the combination to be changed. Movement of the actuator to the unlocking position can only occur when combination dials and sleeves coupled thereto are "on-combination". In the combination-changing position of the actuator, the sleeves are uncoupled from the dials. A stop mechanism is normally effective to prevent movement of the actuator to the combination-changing position and is rendered ineffective by depressing a plunger. The same stop mechanism holds the actuator at the combination-changing position during changing of the combination.
