  • Patent number: 4909951
Abstract: Additives comprising an adduct of a calcium salt of a thiocarbonic acid and calcium hydroxide are useful in lubricants to enhance both the extreme pressure/anti-wear and anti-oxidation capabilities thereof. The lubricants are preferably oils of lubricating viscosity, which may be thickened to a grease-like consistency with one or more oil thickeners and contain from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of said adduct.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 24, 1989
Date of Patent: March 20, 1990
Assignee: Union Oil Company of California
Inventors: Leah T. Mendelson, Richard L. Pilling
  • Patent number: 4908143
Abstract: Additives comprising a salt or complex of tetrathiocarbonic acid are useful in lubricants to enhance both the extreme pressure/anti-wear and anti-oxidant capabilities thereof. The lubricants preferably are oils of lubricating viscosity, which may be thickened to grease-like consistency with one or more oil thickeners, and contain from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of said additives.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 4, 1988
Date of Patent: March 13, 1990
Assignee: Union Oil Company of California
Inventors: Josefina M. Dumdum, Leah T. Mendelson, Richard L. Pilling
  • Patent number: 4908142
Abstract: Additives containing a salt or complex of trithiocarbonic acid are useful in lubricants to enhance the extreme pressure/anti-wear and anti-oxidation capabilities thereof. The lubricants are preferably oils of lubricating viscosity, which may be thickened to a grease-like consistency with one or more oil thickeners, and contains from about 0.1 to about 20 weight percent of said additives.

  • Patent number: 4892670
Abstract: A boron-containing heterocyclic compound prepared by reacting a primary amine or ammonia with an alkylene oxide or epoxide and then reacting concurrently or subsequently this reaction intermediate with a boric acid. This boron-containing heterocyclic compound may further be reacted with a metal, metaloid or other metal compound and even further contain sulfur, such as a sulfide group. The boron-containing heterocyclic compound provides extreme pressure anti-wear properties when provided in a lubricating composition. The lubricating composition may also comprise anti-oxidants, copper corrosion inhibitors, and lead corrosion inhibitors. The anti-wear properties of a lubricating composition can be enhanced using the borates of the present invention in conjunction with a copper compound.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 29, 1985
Date of Patent: January 9, 1990
Assignee: Union Oil Company of California
    Inventor: Leah T. Mendelson
  • Patent number: 4705641
Abstract: The combination of copper and molybdenum salts is shown to be an effective antioxidant and anti-wear additive for hydrocarbons, such as lube oils. Accordingly the present invention is directed to a lube oil having improved oxidation stability, providing improved wear protection with reduced friction and comprising:A. a basestock, andB. an effective amount of a copper salt and a molybdenum salt.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 15, 1986
Date of Patent: November 10, 1987
Assignee: Exxon Research and Engineering Company
Inventors: Irwin L. Goldblatt, Leah T. Mendelson
  • Patent number: 4701274
Abstract: A lubricating composition having extreme pressure anti-wear properties comprises a lubricating oil and a trisubstituted-borate prepared by sulfurizing the reaction product of a boron compound, a phenol compound, and either a mono-functional compound or dihydroxy functional compound free of nitrogen.
