  • Patent number: 5777825
Abstract: An air bearing slider design exhibiting reduced altitude sensitivity and requiring only two etch depths for ease of manufacture. The slider includes a support structure having a leading and trailing step surface disposed thereon. The leading step surface has two side rails joined together at the leading edge and extending toward the trailing edge, forming a negative pressure pocket therebetween. A front pad is formed on the leading step surface and a trailing pad is formed on the trailing step surface. The side rails have a length that is selected for creating a predetermined negative pressure. The trailing and leading step surfaces preferably have a height above the support structure of between 0.5 .mu.m and 5 .mu.m. Preferably, the front and rear pads have a height above the leading and trailing step surfaces respectively that is less than the height of the step surface above the support structures. The side rails may extend substantially to trailing edge.

  • Patent number: 5610784
Abstract: Disclosed is a negative pressure air bearing slider having at least one trailing edge pocket defined by a generally U-shaped rail open to the trailing edge of the slider, and at least one leading edge pocket defined by a generally U-shaped rail open to the leading edge of the slider. Also disclosed is a method for determining an optimal width for a leading edge pocket of predetermined length and depth to provide a flat fly height profile in combination with a trailing edge pocket of predetermined dimensions. For a given trailing edge pocket configuration, width optimization is achieved by constructing a number of prototype sliders, each having a unique leading to trailing edge pocket width ratio; measuring the inner and outer diameter fly heights for each prototype to obtain ID and OD fly height profile curves; and determining a leading edge pocket width corresponding to the point of intersection of the curves.

  • Patent number: 5490025
Abstract: The present invention is an air bearing design and methodology for use in a magnetic disk drive or similar device wherein particles of debris may be present on the recording surface. A deflecting wall is formed proximate to the leading edge of the slider, wherein airflow generated by the rotating disk enters the air bearing surface. The wall is disposed between the leading edge and one or more recessed regions defined by the ABS rail configuration. These recessed regions are ones that would otherwise be open to the incoming airflow and particles of debris. In a preferred embodiment, the wall is formed directly adjacent to the leading edge as an extension of rail portions located at the leading edge. The rail portions may include compression features. This design is suitable for both positive and negative pressure sliders. In an alternate embodiment, the deflecting wall stands alone and extends across substantially the slider's entire width.

  • Patent number: 5438467
Abstract: A negative-pressure air bearing slider structure includes a slider surface disposed adjacent to a data storage medium, and a leading edge relative to the motion of the data storage medium. A U-shaped rail with a closed end facing the leading edge and an open end facing the trailing edge is formed on the slider surface. The closed end of the U-shaped rail extends laterally across less than the width of the slider surface. In a first set of embodiments, there is a single U-shaped rail centered between two side rails. In a second set of embodiments, there are two U-shaped rails, each disposed along a respective side of the slider surface.
