Patent number: 10386697Abstract: The ability to upconvert two low energy photons into one high energy photon has potential applications in solar cells, photodetectors and data storage. In this disclosure, CdSe and PbSe semiconductor nanocrystals are combined with molecular emitters (diphenylanthracene and rubrene) to upconvert photons in both the visible and near infrared spectral regions. Absorption of low energy photons by the nanocrystals is followed by energy transfer to the molecular triplet states, which then undergo triplet-triplet annihilation to create high energy singlet states that emit upconverted light. By using conjugated organic ligands on the nanocrystals to form an energy cascade, the upconversion process can be enhanced by up to three orders of magnitude. The use of different combinations of nanocrystals and emitters shows that this platform has great flexibility in the choice of both excitation and emission wavelengths.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2016Date of Patent: August 20, 2019Assignee: THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIAInventors: Christopher John Bardeen, Ming Lee Tang, Kerry Miller Hanson, Zhiyuan Huang, Xin Li

Patent number: 8130199Abstract: A keyboard type input device used in conjunction with a wristwatch or a portable telephone has multiple key positions provided as character entry keys. Each key corresponds to one key in the selected row of the conventional QWERTY keyboard. A second set of control buttons provide for the selection of which row of a conventional QWERTY keyboard are represented by the character keys in addition to other functions such as case shift, and alpha-numerical control functions. A selected row is shown on a display, as visual feedback. Alternatively the keys are implemented as LCDs with pressure sensors and the characters of the selected row are displayed directly on the corresponding key positions. The keyboard finds particular use in portable devices as it demands less space than traditional keyboards.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2008Date of Patent: March 6, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Frank Rui-Feng Chu, Noboru Kamijo, Denny Duan-Lee Tang
