  • Patent number: 5961302
Abstract: A liquid-sealed vane oscillator includes a housing defining a cavity corresponding to part of a virtual annulus centered around, and extending at least 180.degree. about, an axis of rotation and delimited by first and second ends. A vane is mounted rotatably within the cavity. The vane includes a first seal and a second seal carried with the vane and deployed so as to subdivide the cavity into a first chamber of variable volume between the first end and the first seal, a second chamber of variable volume between the second end and the second seal, and an intermediate volume between the first seal and the second seal. At least one port is provided in fluid communication with each of the first and second chambers. The oscillator also has an axial shaft, penetrating and extending from the cavity, which is mechanically coupled to the vane so as to allow exchange of mechanical power with an external device.

  • Patent number: 5115157
Abstract: A displacement or power mechanical oscillator comprises an oscillation space constituted by a sector of an annular cavity, having a rectangular cross-section in a plane through the axis of the cavity and vertically oriented plane of symmetry. The cavity contains a sealing liquid and a vane in closed matching relationship with the inner walls of the cavity. The vane is symmetrically oscillatable with the liquid in the narrow gaps between vane and cavity walls providing a liquid dynamic seal.

  • Patent number: 4831289
Abstract: A method for gas compression using a two-phase flow gas/liquid metal MHD pump. The method includes providing an MHD pump having a converging flow duct, mixing the gas to be compressed with a liquid metal, to form a two-phase mixture, compressing the gas in the two phase mixture by driving the mixture through the converging duct, using the MHD effect, the heat of compression of the gas being substantially transferred to said liquid metal, separating the two-phase mixture into its gaseous and metallic components, and reducing the pressure of the metallic component by passing it through a pressure-reducing means. There is also provided an n-stage, two-phase flow MHD compressor system. The compressor has practically no moving parts.

  • Patent number: 4749540
Abstract: A demountable tokamak fusion reactor core in which a demountable central portion contains at least the inner toroidal field producing legs of the tokamak toroidal field coil and the plasma containment vessel. Also in the demountable central portion may be poloidal field coils and a means of heating the plasma or heating and shaping the plasma, e.g., an ohmic heating coil. The outer relatively permanent portion of the fusion reactor contains a blanket system within an opening formed by the current return legs of the toroidal field coil. Different embodiments of the ohmic heating coil could include a bucking cylinder toroidal magnet support. A reactor vessel and a dynamic tokamak support and tension suppressing system supports the tokamak.

  • Patent number: 4713945
Abstract: A turret system providing access to the interior of a vacuum vessel integral to a cryostat used for super conducting magnets in MRI systems. The system enabling the movable connection of a neck tube that provides access to the interior of the vacuum vessel when that tube is fixedly attached to the liquified gas container of the cryostat and moves with the liquified gas container, said moveable connection being affected by a supple member attaching said neck tube to said vacuum member, so that relative movement between said liquified gas container and said vacuum vessel does not over-stress said neck tube.

  • Patent number: 4069923
Abstract: An elevator for transporting a load between upper and lower elevations includes a shaft containing liquid therein between the elevations. A buoy accommodates the load to be moved and transports the same within the shaft. A buoyancy control controls the buoyancy of the buoy to cause it to ascend and descend in the shaft. The buoyancy control includes a chamber which is formed in the buoy and which communicates with the liquid in the shaft. A gas control supplies gas under pressure to the chamber for expelling liquid therefrom whereby the buoyant forces acting on the buoy are increased and for venting the gas in the chamber for causing liquid to enter the chamber whereby the buoyant forces acting on the buoy are reduced. The gas control includes descent/ascent protection means for limiting the amount of gas vented from/to the chamber thereby limiting the maximum degree of negative/positive buoyancy of the buoy.
