Abstract: A gaming machine is described herein. The gaming machine includes a processor programmed to execute an algorithm including the steps of initiating an instance of a game by randomly selecting a reel set from a plurality of reel sets including a group of adjacent coupled reels that spin and stop together. The group of adjacent coupled reels includes a variable symbol position group that extends across each of the adjacent coupled reels. The processor randomly selects a special symbol to display in the variable symbol position group. The processor then selects an oversized symbol associated with the special symbol and animates the plurality of reels to spin and stop such that the group of adjacent coupled reels spins and stops together and the oversized symbol is displayed overlaying the variable symbol position group.

Abstract: A gaming machine comprises a display for displaying a game comprising game symbols arranged into an array of game positions. An electronic controller is coupled to the display and configured to control the display of the game symbols, including an expandable symbol. Where the expandable symbol appears in a first game position of the array, the expandable symbol increases in size and in response the array increases in size by adding new game positions on the display. A method is also provided.
