  • Patent number: 6544359
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of producing objects of cast iron containing compacted (vermicular) graphite crystals, by preparing a cast iron melt having substantially a carbon content at the desired final level and a silicon content below the desired final value, so that the equilibrium temperature (TE) for the reaction between carbon and SiO2 falls near 1400° C., and adjusting the temperature of the melt (TM) to a value between the equilibrium temperature (TE) and the “boiling temperature” (TB), to allow absorption of oxygen by the melt to a level exceeding the desired level at the time the melt is poured into a mold, adding the required amount of silicon, and thereafter reducing the oxygen content by addition of magnesium or magnesium containing material, preferably a FeSiMg-alloy to an oxygen level of 10 to 20 ppm oxygen in liquid solution, and forming particles of magnesium silicates as well as cast objects obtained by the method.

  • Patent number: 6267829
Abstract: The present invention is a method for producing an iron-containing hypoeutectic alloy free from primary platelet-shaped beta-phase of the Al5FeSi in the solidified structure by the steps (a) providing an iron-containing aluminum alloy having a composition within the following limits, in weight percent, 6-10% Si, 0.05-1.0% Mn, 0.4-2% Fe, at least one of 1) 0.01-0.8% Ti and/or Zr 2) 0.005-0.5% Sr and/or Na and/or Ba, 0-6.0% Cu, 0-2.0% Cr, 0-2.0% Mg, 0-6.0% Zn, 0-0.

  • Patent number: 6073677
Abstract: The invention is a method of controlling the grain refinement of certain aluminium alloys. The grain sizes for different values of the grain growth index, GGI, are determined for the used casting method. The GGI is represented by the sum of m(k-1) value multiplied with the concentration for every element in the aluminium alloy. If the value for a certain alloy is compared with known relations between the m(k-1) value and the grain size the composition of the alloy melt is amended to an optimum grain size by adding a grain size affecting agent. The method can be further improved by optimising the amount of nucleating agent.

  • Patent number: 5758706
Abstract: A method for continuously providing pretreated molten iron for casting objects which solidify as compacted cast iron, in which inoculating agents are added immediately prior to casting, in exact quantities. In practicing the method, the ability of the fully treated cast iron to crystallize is measured and the result of this measurement is used for feedback control of the supply of inoculating agent, this supply being effected at the last possible stage of the treatment process, so as to optimize the amount of inoculating agent introduced to the system. Since the inoculating a gent will normally include FeSi, it will also fed back and used to increase or reduce the addition of agents for adjusting the carbon and/or silicon contents of the iron as necessary.

  • Patent number: 5104616
Abstract: A method for the production of master alloys intended for grain refining of aluminum melts and being of the type which comprises of aluminum and 1-15 percent by weight titanium, where titanium is present in the form of intermetallic crystals of titanium aluminide in combination with additives of carbon and/or nitrogen. The method is characterized by adding carbon and/or nitrogen to the aluminum melt in an amount corresponding to at least 0.01 percent by weight in the resultant solidified material. The addition of the carbon and/or nitrogen is effected in elemental form or in the form of dissociable carbon and/or nitrogen containing compounds, making said addition before of during an established thermodynamic state of dissolution of existing crystals of titanium aluminide, and bringing the melt into a thermodynamic state where crystals of titanium aluminide present grow in size and thereafter causing the melt to solidify. Also a master alloy produced according to the above method is claimed.

  • Patent number: 4046509
Abstract: A method for determining and regulating the conditions of crystallization in the solidification of melts. A sample of the melt is taken in a specially constructed test vessel with a volumetric capacity of from 5-50 cm.sup.3 and the temperature of the sample is measured centrally of the sample. From the information obtained a solidification curve is determined from which conditions characteristic of the solidification properties can be derived, thereby indicating the manner in which the melt should be modified to obtain desired properties.
