Abstract: A magnetic tape comprising a substrate having on one side thereof a magnetic layer serving as a recording surface and on the other side thereof a resin layer serving as a non-recording surface, wherein said magnetic tape has a region on the side of the non-recording surface along the longitudinal direction of the tape in which a regular pattern for servo tracking having different optical properties from the other major region of the side of the non-recording surface is to be formed, and said magnetic tape has a thickness of 7 &mgr;m or less.

Abstract: A magnetic storage medium formed on a front major surface of a tape substrate defines a multiplicity of longitudinal data recording and playback tracks, each track having a nominal lateral location relative to the other tracks: and a predetermined optically manifested track servo pattern defined on the back major surface of the tape for indicating lateral displacement of the tape from a nominal lateral location of the track during tape movement across a read/write head. A magnetic tape recording and playback system employing the magnetic storage medium is also disclosed.

Abstract: An optical tracking system is presented which aligns a recording head with a magnetic tape. The system relies on an optically detectable servo track on the back of the tape. The servo track is formed by repeatedly engraving, at spaced intervals, three co-linear marks perpendicular to the length of the tape. Laser light reflects off the marks, and passes through a ball lens that directs the reflected light on to separate light detectors, one for each mark. By recording characteristics of the reflected light, the detectors transmit information to the system that permits the recording head to be properly aligned with the tape.

Abstract: A tape mini-cartridge is functionally compatible with a larger industry standard tape cartridge. A mini-cartridge adapter adapts the mini-cartridge to be compatible with a standard tape drive by presenting the standard structural and functional appearances to the tape drive as presented by the larger standard tape cartridge. Since the standard cartridge has a plurality of structural elements including reel locks, leader buckle guide, and write protect flag engaged by the standard drive, the cartridge adapter effectively transfers these engagements and forces to and from the mini-cartridge in a manner providing full structural interchangeability with the standard tape cartridge.
